Plex question.

I have a 2008 Standard. Serial# says it was made July 24 2008.

Is the plex obvious? I don’t see a difference or any thing special about the neck shape.

It has no strap locks and the POTS are mounted to metal not a circuit board.

Thanks

I don't think you're guitar would have been Plek'd.

I'm certainly not the resident expert on when Pleking started and what guitars were Plek'd though.

If you don't have the Neutrik locking jack, asymmetrical neck, or other features listed on the Gibson site for that model, you likely don't have a "2008 Standard", but rather may have an LP Standard (prior model) that was manufactured in 2008 (they were produced until around summer of 2008 prior to being discontinued). If that is the case, your guitar was almost certainly not Plek'd.

Post your model number (i.e., LP6+??NH1), or similar, which is listed on the Check List / Final Inspection card on your guitar (as well as on the label on the Gibson carton if you have it).

I don't know if it's all guitars. Pleking all Custom Shop guitars began in early 2007, I know for sure.

I think they started pleking the Standards & Traditionals in 2008. The rest, like Studios & what not, I have no idea.

I'm sure they all will eventually.

They switched mid year. Mine is an 08 Standard, but it has the specs of the 07. Since you don't have a circuit board, you have the old style standard. The neck is either a 50s neck or the slightly slimmer 60s neck. Did it come with any case candy. There should be a checklist. The code on the checklist will tell you the neck shape.

That looks awesome!

To clarify I personally do not think standards came with 'case candy' at most you get a packing slip/QC check list and a manual plus the pick guard.

I may be wrong however.

they started Pleking in '06 on the Historics, same time they introduced the VOS finishing.

are you talking about specifically the 08 standards about case candy? i have an 03 standard and it came with everything you said plus the truss rod tool and thats pretty much all i expected to be in there

So its a "pre-08" 08 Standard. Not all of the new features were well received, so you're lucky. Nice figure on the mahogany back.

They didn't advertise the Plek being used on GibsonUSA models until the Traditional and the new/revised 08. You could try sending a pic of the back of the headstock and the serial number to Gibson. They'll notice that you have the old style tuners and check the serial number for you.

What was not well recieved? As far as I'm aware the 2008 LP Std comes with a host of functional upgrades, i.e. Locking Tuners, Tone Pro's Bridge, Neutrik Locking Jack, Dunlop Strap Locks, Gold plated Pot's and Plek setup. So if I purchased a guitar advertised as a 2008 Std I would be pretty hacked off it it came minus these expensive upgrades!

The only area's of this guitar that I know has been hotly debated is the chambered body (Not weight relieved as in some previous models) and asymmetrical neck profile. Some LP purists believe an LP is not a proper LP unless it is back breakingly heavy! and has a chunky 50's neck.

I own bought my 2008 Std on the strength of these upgrades as I would have eventually forked out for the Tone Pro's bridge and Locking tuners seperately.

Consider yourself lucky!!! Gibson did not release the "New Standard" (sort of like New Coke IMO) until Aug 08. Your guitar will not be Pleked, have the goofy printed circuit board (PCB) electronics, locking jack, asymmetric neck or most importantly NOT HOLLOWED OUT.

Enjoy it my friend, shes a real beaut. =P~

Case candy is whatever comes in the case; so' date=' yes, I would consider the checklist and owners manual as case candy for a Gibson USA guitar. Unfortunately, it's common for music store employees to throw this stuff out and also mix & match guitar cases.

Yes, but I did say all Custom Shop guitars, not specifically the historics. Customs, ES guitars, etc. Gibson Custom Shop started pleking everything in early 2007.

Steve, Steve, Steve...=P~

You should know that any change to the Les Paul is not well received.

SB...yes it is hollow. All Standards, 2007 & newer, are chambered.

I want to thank everyone for putting in their opinion on this. This is how I/we learn.

My biggest fear was that I had a fake. I had a professional setup done by a local person that has been doing repair/setups for 30 years and was assured that it was a real Gibson. I paid $2000 for this LP and some might say too much and some might say good deal. I myself feel it was a good deal and have no regrets. I have no intention of ever parting with it but in 15 – 20 years from now I think I’d at least break even.

Once again thank to all. I really learn from the forum.

I guess what I really meant by 'case candy' was the sort of stuff you get with customs and historics. I do stand corrected in that everything you get is 'case candy' [-(

Back on topic! I guess this 2008 'New Std' V 'Old Std' will be a hotly contested one. To be fair I don't think anyone would be disadvantaged in a resale situation by either, because for every person who wants locking tuners, jack etc on the new 2008 there will be those who covet the non-chambered model.
