String question for old archtop

While I am not 100% positive, I believe Gibson archtops did not start sporting X bracing until late-1934 or 1935 when they launched their 17" "Advanced" bodies.   Easy enough to identify though by the two- hump top.

At present the only Gibson archtop I play is a 1920 L3.  As it predates the ADJ truss rod I tend to be somewhat scaredy and have been sticking with PB 12 s.  I prefer Newtones when I remember to order them.  The only other archtop I owned for a good length of time was an Epiphone Triumph Regent.  My favorite strings on that one were D'Addario Nickel Bronze 13s.  The only L12 I have ever spent any real time with was built in 1939 which I was thinking about buying.  It was strung with PB 13s but do not have a  clue what brand they were.  Never thought to ask.
