1943 LG-2

Late this afternoon I am going to a giant exclusive, used only dealer, here in Oz to smell the mildewed amps and cases as well as to look at a 1943 LG-2. He wants three grand. I'll be looking up info the next few hours as I am not familiar with that model & year. But does that price sound right to anybody? And anyone know the ranking of that model. I just smell something besides, mildew.

Condition is, "fair" so that means pretty bad with dings and finish checking or outright cracks. But, everybody needs a project, and I'm getting close to ready for another. What do you guys and gals think?

Off to Research Land!

If my '44 was lost or stolen, I would expect to pay more than 3k to replace it.

But I don't know what the actual current market price is.

If it is light as a feather, sounds great, and close to structuraly sound, sounds like a fair price to me.

Nid,

Thanks. Gives me a start, and that is pretty much how it is described also; wth the added words, "sweet playing". But, just like you, 3k?

I would say that is likely a good price. I have seen a few 50's LG2's in a local shop here that range from $2500 to over $3000 and they are not what I would call in "Mint" condition.

I got my 64 LG1 about 3 weeks ago for right around $1150. I wouldn't sell it for under $2000 myself. I am actually thinking that I will be putting a few hundred in for a neck reset, bone swap and maybe a new bridge since the wood replacement had cracked from lack of humidity when I got it. (although now it seems to be healing itself since I started major humidification in the case over the last 3 weeks.) There is no hurry on any of my repairs and the guitar plays really nice right now anyway.

Would a 43 LG2 be a banner headstock? If so, they are worth more than the none banner headstock.

'43 would indeed be a banner headstock, thus worth more than a non-banner, collector wise. LG-2s can be wonderful instruments, and 3k probably is about right for a banner variant. Go play it and decide ...

Probably about right if it's in decent condition. I got my 1946 LG-2 for $2300 last year. All original except the saddle. Getting close to needing a neck reset, although plays beautifully as is. Not much saddle left though. Also has a repaired side crack and some overspray. Terrific sounding guitar, LG-2's are among my favorites. The Banner will add value, but the "fair" condition description would get me to look at it very closely.

Steve,

I don't know the prices in your neck of the planet, but that sounds quite fair to me. In any event, if you'd like to research the Banner era, you might want to start with our companion site to our Banner book project: BannerGibsons In particular, I hope that you find the Registry useful. Oh, and if you do buy the guitar, please consider sharing info and pictures with us so that we keep or Registry expanding.

Thanks everybody. I'm back. It was a banner headstock and in legitimate 'good' condition over the reported 'fair'. I thought I had an appointment and so did the four other guys who were present. I bowed out as $4k was offerred. I appreciate everyone's input. It was nice as is, and that was far more than I want to pay for a project guitar.

I paid $1800 for mine about a year ago, but it was a project. I've since put in about $600--and could put in more easily. Non-original bridge, tuners, overspray back, and a neck reset so sloppy looking that it seems to be the luthiers equivalent of using leaches for surgery. But it is patched up, light as a feather and just plain wonderful.

You might want to post a "Want to Buy" on the UMGF and see what comes up Someone was selling a '46 LG-2 for not much more than a $1000 ot that long ago--that was a project guitar too of course.
