the guitar butcher Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 When i bought my SG my dad brought up a point. why are there all these Les Pauls in here and not many SG's. Therwe were literaly maybe 10 SG's and 100 Les Pauls It sucks people are letting the sg die out and only geting lp's Is this happining at your local guitar store
yoda Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 I think it's because the LP is a more popular model, kind of the flagship of the gibson line. there are also more LP models to choose from than SG models. I love and own both guitars, but i think people goto the LP first. I wish more people would look at SG's, but marketplace drives shelf space.
jimmiJAMM Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 LPs are WAY too heavy and that damn selector switch gets in the way of my strumminnnnn' I'm currently trying to sell mine on Craigslist
hbomb76 Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Yeah, but you see which ones are drying up faster and which are left to ferment, dontcha'? ;) H-Bomb
Corrosion of conformity Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I think it might be that the Les Paul model is much more popular...and in my opinion a better guitar then the SG

There's too many addicts. I just bought one a couple months ago and I'm literally hooked.
dem00n Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Yes but rumor is that SG has more custom GC guitars then Les Pauls. What i mean by GC custom is that GC has their own custom guitars that arent really customs...(fender and ibanez do this to!)
SG dude Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 LPs are WAY too heavy and that damn selector switch gets in the way of my strumminnnnn' I'm currently trying to sell mine on Craigslist wow that was shortlived.
Maple Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 same story at Long and McQuade in Canada. but there are a lot og SG's to be found, all the various modals. still way more LP's on the rack. doesn't bother me.. just means the SG is a little more unique... meaning you find more LP players... that's cool with me.
NeoConMan Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Market demand. LP has outsold the SG every year since 1968. Matter of personal taste, and result of marketing by the companies - including endorsements. I've been to at least 300 concerts and club gigs over the last 30 years and saw more Strats onstage than anything else. Les Pauls are pretty common, and I usually take notice when somebody pulls out an SG during a gig. One friend of mine has several of each for weekend club gigs, he ALWAYS has a LP there and sometimes an SG. My dealer has been in business for 32 years, and will tell you they have ALWAYS sold 3 or 4 les Pauls for every SG. They have the best selection of both that I have ever seen in one store, so the choice is made by the buyer. SG is a great guitar (I have a few) but the LP is still my favorite for rocking out - after my ES-335..... Oh, and don't let Guitar Center be your prime indicator of what is really happening in the guitar business. They have sort of a perverse alternate reality as their business model.
NeoConMan Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 10 SG's and 100 Les Pauls Where's your Guitar Center? I've NEVER seen 100 Les Pauls in a Guitar Center over 20 years - and I've been in their stores coast to coast. If they did actually have 100 of them, my guess is that 75 were Epiphones.
Dub-T-123 Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 I despise guitar center. Although I got my SG there and it changed my life. Lol. The guitar center close to my house sucks. Chock full of d-bags of every persuasion. BUT. The original g-center in Hollywood is amazing. They have the best selection of new and vintage gibsons I've ever seen. If you ever have a chance go there. Honestly I saw alot of SGs there. Old juniors customs standards everything. It's awesome. Too bad it's like a half hour away or I'd go every day.
NeoConMan Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 The original g-center in Hollywood is amazing. Been there, several years ago. Inventory was amazing for sure.
pohatu771 Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Too bad it's like a half hour away or I'd go every day. The closest Guitar Center is half an hour away from me. I still drive an hour to shop at the great House of Guitars.
Demoryn Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 I go to the GC in Harrisburg, PA whenever I can. I agree, their Les Paul display is much bigger than the one for SGs, but they do have a nice selection of SGs. Honestly, I don't think there are as many variations of the SG as there are of the LP
TinFish Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 The SG has always taken the back seat to the Les Paul, just like the Telecaster takes a back seat to the Strat. It doesn't mean they aren't great guitars. I Like SG's and Tele's better than I like Les Pauls and Strats, probably becasue they are less common. The other thing is that Les Pauls are offered in more models and way more finish options, so for people to get a good look at all the different Les Pauls the stores naturally have to stock more, and like others have said the Les Paul outsells the SG so it's just makes good business sense. SG's aren't dying out or going anywhere though, at least not while I'm around!
NeoConMan Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Until I began researching my 12 string SG I had no idea there were so many variations on the SG theme. Different neck angles, different headstock angles, joint at different frets, every bridge/tremolo Gibson ever made.... Every pickup combo you can think of (even single coils) and at least a dozen different control schemes. Body carves are different over the years, bevels and such. I would venture to say the SG has seen more variations than the Les Paul.

I agree it would be pretty darn close, hard to say if there have been more variations of one or the other though. Is your avatar now a dogs a$$hole Neo? haha
NeoConMan Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Is your avatar now a dogs a$$hole Neo? Indeed. Her name is Leah. That's the view I usually get when I'm sitting in my chair. I made the mistake of rubbing her butt and hindquarters with my feet a few times, now she walks up to my chair and simply turns around wagging her tail. She'd rather have her butt rubbed than anything else. Stupid f-ing dog....

Such proud and noble beasts they are.

There aren't many cuz everybody's buying them ... supply/demand. Probably also why the retail price has gone up $500 over the past 5 years ...
