xxxlshane Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 I realize that posting this under the LP section might taint the results but here goes. I currently have a Les Paul Traditional (Ice Tea) and a SG Standard (cherry) and love both of these guitars. As many of the members of the forum I also have the desire to increase my "collection". What would you pick up: The new LP standard traditional pro , the one with the split coils. OR The SG 61 re-issue with the 57 classics. As you probably know they both are at the same price point. What would you get and why?
retrosurfer1959 Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 The LP Pro - only because I got one about three days ago and so far I love it, looks good and well finished no complaints at all and I was surprised at how good the 57 and BB combo plays and the taps on both pickups add a lot of flexibility to the available tone. The satin finish on the back and neck is amazing also. Overall a great guitar with some really good options at the 2k price point this is a lot of guitar for the money. That said both are nice and it would fall back onto your preference and the kind of music you play. I'm probably a bad person to compare the two I have seven or eight LP's and one SG. Nothing against SG's but between the two I always pick LP or all but once I guess
Corrosion of conformity Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I would go with the Les Paul, mainly because I think it looks much better then the 61 reissue, but they'll both sound great.
Tim Plains Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 That's a toughy... Speaking strictly new, I'd go for the LP, personally...but keep in mind you can find used '61RIs in mint condition for $1,000 - $1,200. Actually, I just re-read your post and if you already have a Traditional go for something else. If you're patient, you can find a used '58 reissue Les Paul for around $2,000. That's what I would do. A much better guitar than a Traditional Pro (sorry Trad owners). Check the members classified section at My Les Paul and the Les Paul Forum periodically. You'll see they pop up quite often. I scored a sweet sounding 2007 chambered '58 reissue from a local forum member for $2,300 US. Just to show you that you can get a high end LP for considerably less money than what you'd expect. CR8s are $3,700 on guitarcenter.com.
xxxlshane Posted April 26, 2009 Author Posted April 26, 2009 Thanks for that different thought Are Nine. I appreciate everyone's input
Thin_Lizzy Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I'd go for the LP, a classy piece of kit and those humbuckers look great . By the way I bought a Les Paul Traditional (Ice Tea) the other day too and it's fantastic!
elantric Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Id broaden my horizons and get a nice Gretsch or one from California.
xxxlshane Posted April 26, 2009 Author Posted April 26, 2009 thin_lizzy...I know what you mean about the traditional ...I have mine sitting next to me as I type this. Love it. Elantric...actually I sold my "california" guitars and my gretch when I discovered Gibson. They were just sitting collecting dust. I found that I really like the flat radius of the Gibson's. I is just personal choice.
jameswithesg Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 normally id say the 61 sg, but with the coil taps id say take the paul, those taps will offer much more tonal variations, or you can coil tap the pickups of the 61 sg yourself, like me haha
Silverbursted Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 You already have one of each. If you want to make your Traditional a Pro, spend $8 on a push-pull pot and rewire. Or better yet take the pups from your Traditional (57s) and drop them in your SG and get some Seymour Duncans or Dimarzios and coil tap those for your Traditional. Just make sure the pups you put in are 4 wire. Then you will have both of what you are asking for. No need to spend money just for the sake of spending money.
charlie brown Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Neither! You have a good LP and SG. Get a 335 or similar! Broaden your tone palette a bit...even within the Gibson family. Otherwise, look at Gretsch, Rickenbacker, and/or Fender (Strat, Tele, Jazzmaster). CB
xxxlshane Posted April 26, 2009 Author Posted April 26, 2009 SilverB... thanks for the great ideas that make a lot of sense. Unfortunately, I have a quirk that I like to keep my gibsons stock (with the exception of strings). after are nine's comments I am leaning in that sort of directions...or maybe nothing at all. thanks again
Silverbursted Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Oops, meant to suggest that as well. Get yourself something else, all of the suggestions are great.
Silverbursted Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 SilverB... thanks for the great ideas that make a lot of sense. Unfortunately' date=' I have a quirk that I like to keep my gibsons stock (with the exception of strings). after are nine's comments I am leaning in that sort of directions...or maybe nothing at all. thanks again[/quote'] Why??? Are you planning on selling them? Those are easily reversible mods, if you do decide to sell.
xxxlshane Posted April 26, 2009 Author Posted April 26, 2009 silverB... not planning on selling. Like I said it is a quirk. I figure that Gibson set up a guitar to fit a niche in the market or to hit a specific tone. I take back about only changikng stings...I usually have strap locks installed. ALSO...if I don't mod it is easier to convince my beutiful wife that I neeed a different guitar..
xxxlshane Posted April 29, 2009 Author Posted April 29, 2009 Here is the ending of the story. I went to a different guitar center than I normally go to. (the more I go to GC the more I don't care for it...unfortunately around here in Western Washington they have the best prices and always seem to be willing to come down in price a little...sometimes a lot)... I went in to try out the 61 SG and the LP Std Trad Pro again thru the amp I use at home most of the time "Peavey Valve King Stack". I played the SG and it sounded really good with the 57 pickups (same as on my LP trad btw). Then I tried the vintage SB Std Trad Pro taking advantage of all the pu options...neck 57 bridge BB3... and really liked the tone difference when splitting and changing to single pick up sound. Obviously severly leaning towards the LP at that point but I was not ..."wow" crazy about the Vintage burst color. Just my preference..no offence intended. I then looked higher on the was a spotted another STD TRAD in Heritage cherry sunburst with a top that has some spots in it kind of like a birds eye maple. That did it..for me that was the WOW..crazy for the color moment. Of course I had them pull it down and I played if for a bit and found this guitar to be even more comfortable to me (if that makes sense). Also, it was a bit heavier than the V SB..which I like. Any Way I picked up the Heritage Cherry LP Standard Traditional Pro after they agreed to give me the $50 off coupon they were running last weekend even though it was not supposed to apply. Not a huge savings but every bit helps and I like it when I feel I stick it to GC a little bit; even though I did not in the big picture. I will post pictures tonight if anybody wants me to...I have not seen any of the H cherry of this model pictured on the forum yet. Thanks as usual for your help forum.... BTW..ARE NINE...I will be looking into getting the 58 you recomended when the guitar fund builds back up.
Luap Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Congrats on your new guitar. Would like to see pics!

xxxlshane Posted April 29, 2009 Author Posted April 29, 2009 As requested...sorry for my poor photography skills. As usual the camera does not quite capture the full beuty. Pictures of the new Heritage Cherry Sunburst Standard Traditional Pro thanks again for all the help.
Swmcv2007 Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Wow beautiful guitar man. Nice choice. I really like how there is a LP model with coil splitting options.
