enchong Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Hi Guys, I believe in having the best for the best!! I have an LP Custom Shop Custom and would like to give it the best it should deserve. For those with long LP experience, kindly advise me on the BEST STRINGS for my LP taking in account I only do rhythm, the BEST STRAP( I use a 4 inch Moody strap and its good for the weight for the custom), the BEST TUNER for it. Would greatly appreciate your advise.. Thanks!!!
crossroadsnyc Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Ernie Ball. I'm going to take a stab in the dark and guess that it's very important for you to impress your friends, so if you need a list of artists using them to back up your claim of using "only the best" here you go: http://www.ernieball.com/artist_listing
RichCI Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Spend the most money you can on everything. Or buy WebStrings.
stevezapp Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I use Ernie Ball Slinky's - always done me well. You have a choice of two tuners that both come highly recommended: - There's the Peterson Stroboflip or the more slightly more responsive Turbo Tuner. Both are strobe tuners. Check out this to see the comparison.
Thundergod Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Tuner: Peterson, you get to chose from a portable version, a pedal version and a rack mountable version, all of them are great. Strings... why not gibson? (I like Ernie Balls tho)
Tim Plains Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Hi Guys' date=' I believe in having the best for the best!! I have an LP Custom Shop Custom and would like to give it the best it should deserve.[/quote']Is it a '54 or '57 Custom reissue? 'Cause if it's not, it's not the best...so you know. enchong, no offense but these threads are stupid. There are no best strings, there are no best straps, there are no best tuners. If there were 'the best' than everybody would buy that one and that one only. Strings Go to a local music store and buy a few different string bands. Try them out, see which ones you like and which ones you don't. Just know that there are two types - (PNS) pure nickel strings & (NWS) nickel wound strings. PNS are (as the same suggests) pure nickel. They produce a warmer sound will also do less damage to your frets over time. NWS are only nickel on the outside. They will give you a more aggressive sound and are also harder on your frets. I use Fender PNS, Gibson Brite Wires & Gibson Vintage Reissues Straps While you're at the music store look at and feel all the straps. Again, buy the one you like most...but if your 4" Moody strap is good for the weight of the guitar and you like how it looks/feels, then why replace it? I use thin Levi's suede straps. Tuners There are a lot of great tuners and you don't necessarily need an expensive one. Just make sure the one you get can also be used to adjust your intonation. Every tuner I've encountered has this ability but I've heard that some do not. I use a Boss TU-15. Hope this helps.
AXE® Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 PNS are (as the same suggests) pure nickel. They produce a warmer sound will also do less damage to your frets over time. Does anyone wear through the windings to the steel core when they play? If so a more frequent string change is in order.
enchong Posted April 26, 2009 Author Posted April 26, 2009 Thanks for all your advise!!! For the strap, just wanted to get some more feedback as I am quite happy with the 4 inch Moody. Before this Moody I bought 6 straps trying to find the right one and I guess this is it. For the strings, i have tried the GHS, Addario, Elixir and I just ordered a .10 and .11 Blue Steel sets. I will try the Ernie Ball Slinkys next time as I have noted them. Will go with the PNS as I need warmer sounds as "Are Nine" stated. For the tuner I use a BOSS chromatic tuner and will order a Peterson Stroboflip as most of you suggested. For the guitar its a 54 reissue Black Beauty. This forum is really helpful to us amateurs and hobbyist alike. This will save me a lot of money. hahahaha Thanks again for all your advise!! I have also another thread which is asking for advise for an amplifier... I have used a Yamaha F100 and a VOX and a Laney and am thinking of going into more serious amps like a Marshall, Fender twin reverb or a Mesa Boogie..
Tim Plains Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 How are the nickle wound harder on the frets than nickle core? I read it on-line somewhere and I believe it's also written in the Les Paul Manual. enchong, I find it odd that your signature says you have a '59 ES-335 but then doesn't say you have a '54 Custom. Does you Custom have P-90s or humbuckers?
enchong Posted April 26, 2009 Author Posted April 26, 2009 Hi Axe, I have a 59 ES 335 reissue and an LP Custom Shop Custom (http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-Custom/Les-Paul-Custom.aspx). I think these are humbuckers... I dont have the 3 pick up model just 2. Pls correct me if I described it wrong. Thanks
Tim Plains Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 If that's your guitar, yes, they are humbuckers. You don't have a '54 reissue, like you said above. It's just a regular Custom. Good, but not the best...
Thundergod Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 This is the best guitar: DeVries Punisher POS made by Eric DeVries, master luthier, magician, superb cook and the best lover (you wouldn't believe this guy... to this day he keeps on trying to convince (through insults) people that he builds the best guitars+:-@ )
enchong Posted April 26, 2009 Author Posted April 26, 2009 Axe, thanks for the advise...it is the best I can afford and want to give it the best too! hahaha.. Thundergod, that guitar looks like a spacecraft to me hahaha..thanks for all your help!! Glad to be a part of this forum.
Tim Plains Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Why is AXE getting the credit for all my work? Customs are great guitars, I'm just razzin' ya. I have one myself.
Bluemoon Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I am not sure you can get a more comfortable strap than a Moody. They are a good investment if you gig...but not so much for the basement player.
Thundergod Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Axe' date=' thanks for the advise...it is the best I can afford and want to give it the best too! hahaha.. Thundergod, that guitar looks like a spacecraft to me hahaha..thanks for all your help!! Glad to be a part of this forum.[/quote'] It's actually considered by many (and might actually be) the worst guitar ever made... I just had to bring it here... it was made by an australian nutjob, sold for 800 bucks plus (get this) 100 for the "shop quality custom case" So I figured every time I saw people here debating which gibson is the best I would show it so everyone realized all gibbies are great and that's all that matters.
