FennRx
so i finally had the Jimmy Page type mod done to my classic...but the 500t did not have 4 conductor wiring because it was the stock PU, so i had to replace it with what i had ( a used SD). now my LP doesn't sound like a LP and I'm kinda bummed. i'm thinking that what i should do is swap both PUs out. the coil tap is on the bridge so i will definitely need a 4 conductor pickup there. gibson makes the 498t aftermarket with this wiring. should i drop that in the bridge and replace the neck with the 490r or maybe a 57 Classic or BB? obviously i'm trying to get a more vintage PAF sound but it seems like all the BBs and 57 Classics are 2 conductor. some people suggested buying from wolfetone or wcr crossroads/Darkbursts. What do you guys think?
MarksGuitars
Hello, I actually replaced the stock 2 wire 490/498 pups in my LP standard with the 4 wire version and tapped each with a push/pull pot. After all that work I was not impressed with any of the tapped sounds in combo or alone. I quickly figured out that the Les Paul sounded best (IMHO) with the original 490/498 combo. Not leaving well enough alone I wound up with 57/57+ pups which I have used now for years. BUT after all this I am seriously considering going back to stock 490/498s. I recently borrowed a friends LP Custom with stock 490/498 and it reminded me of how good my LP used to sound. Go figure. Well hope that is at least interesting to read if not actually helpful. Good luck.
