yucancallmepatty' date=' it's a great guitar. Other than the frills, such as the inlays, it's the same as an SG Standard. The only real difference is the bridge pickup. You have two 490 pickups and the Standard as a 490 in the neck and a 498 in the bridge.

alright im actually getting hooked up with

(i beleive they are) burstbuckers at this very moment,

my guitar techs installing it now.

so after that, my guitar is pretty much a beast?

or at least getting there?

ive read theres theres like a lot of differences between the epi g-400

and the gibson standard.

things like the way a nut was carved and stuff like that , which people makes it seem like a serious problem.

does the SG special, have any 'bad' things like that?

Deleting a thread and starting the same topic over again doesn`t get you different answers...

It`s a good guitar. Two 490 pickups. Otherwise' date=' same electonics as a Standard.[/quote']

calm down man, I didn't see it the first time, and besides there's nothing wrong with wanting answers...anyway, I've played on an SG Special Faded a few times, and from what I can tell they're very good guitars, they just don't look as nice as a Standard.

My friend has one, and I played it a lot for about a month, and it's a decent guitar. Honestly, the best-feeling SG I've played was an Epiphone 1966 G-400... I didn't like the neck much on the Faded, and the pickups just didn't do much for me. Neck position was nice, but the bridge position was almost unusable, it was so quiet.

Yes, it is a good guitar.

It is cheaper than an SG Standard because it does not have trapezoid inlays, neck binding, and pickup covers(cosmetics).

Others have already mentioned the bridge pickup is a 490T which uses an Alnico II magnet which is not as hot as the 498T found in The SG Standard which uses an Alnico V magnet.

I have an SG Special and I think it is a great guitar.

You should keep it if you like it, if you don't you should get a different one. :)

Not to be a jerk' date=' but if you already bought it isn't a little late to be asking if it's a good guitar? Do you like it? If you like it, it's good enough, right? If you've played it, that should give you the picture[/quote']

its cool mann, but

through an endorsement with a local music shop

i got it dirt cheap

like theres no way i could pass it up.

and i buy n sell equipment like crazy

but yeah sure, i like it

and id agree i would say its good enough if i like it,

but i just mostly wanted to know about the guitar

like its specs

and other peoples view on it.

In that case, I've played Faded Specials, and they're good guitars, but there are a couple things personally that I don't like/would change. I'm not the biggest fan of the faded finishes, and the neck isn't bound like a standard. Those are just cosmetic, and it's all personal choice. The thing I would change are the pickups. I don't get what I want outta the 490s. Bottom line, if you like the special's look, then it's worth keeping, just throw some better pickups in. If cosmetics don't bother you, it's no lower is quality than the Standard.

I'm waiting for "Are Nine" to chastise Demoryn's posting the same answer twice. Don't you know how to hit the enter button, Domoryn? Come on ... get with the game.

They are fine guitars, I own one as well as a standard. The standard is much nicer in many aspects but the faded was a great deal at $600.00, now that they are ~$900, I'd say they are still decent but probably would opt for a classic instead.

Whats the difference between a standard and a special? Pot's, knobs, bridge pup, neck binding, neck joint (1/4" thinner, may be shorter as well), no pup covers, no trap inlays, screened logo instead of inlay, no headstock inlay, less quality control (this could be just my special but all the screw heads were stripped, the wood wasn't sanded as nicely and I had some tool marks on the guitar) and of course the finish.

I also found the neck angle to be slightly different on my special, I just cannot get the action as low as I have it on the standard. This could be specific to my particular guitar.

In short these are gibsons entry level guitar but unlike other companies entry level offerings they are still great guitars.

Just to give the other point of view, I looked at two fadeds at my local guitar shop and I wouldnt have bought either one. Both had terribly finished necks remeniscent of sub $100 guitars with badly finished (Sharp-edged) frets . I know looks are not everything but overall they just didnt look like a $800 guitar. Sure the PUPs and electrics are good, if not great, but at that price I expect better overall.

I was left with two options. Either spend even more on a Standard or higher model or less on a great Epiphone. I am glad I went for the Epi which has a beautiful finish and fast, smooth neck. It also has better pickups (Gibson Dirty Fingers) than the Gibson Special (490s). I have nothing but praise for the Epi SGs (G400 and up, mine is a prophecy) although Epi in general can be a bit hit and miss as illustated by my futura prophecy which is nowhere near as good (made in indonesia as opposed to the SG made in China).
