romanos27 Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I'm curious which version of the '57 gold top you prefer. Personally, I'm totally torn. Thanks for your input!! Brian
romanos27 Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 Not a large sample yet, but definitely seeing a favorite...
daveinspain Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Wouldn't let me vote but I like the dark back....
crossroadsnyc Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Regular. That's one of the appeals of the GT for me.
Slick Joe Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 After googling both guitars I like the dark back
BIGBENDS Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I've lusted after the Darkback since the first time I saw it, but I wouldn't turn down a "Regular Stained" goldtop if the price is right.
Silverbursted Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I wish I could vote twice (sort of like they do in Illinois). Hehehe
gromaj Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Both are very nice, but I slightly prefer Goldtops with a dark back.
HeadCase Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Torn. Depends on the "Regular" back (wood grain)...
Tim Plains Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 romanos, you forgot one...there's also an all gold, gold top - front and back. Regular. I like to see the wood. +1
romanos27 Posted April 30, 2009 Author Posted April 30, 2009 That's right, I did forget about the all gold version. I don't think I've ever seen one in person. Those are pretty rare, aren't they?
Tim Plains Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Yes, they are quite rare. I've only seen two in person and one on eBay.
NeoConMan Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 And gaudy as hell.... If Mr. T or any Gangsta Rappers played a Les Paul, that would be the one. One of the Guitar Centers here in Phoenix was gonna cut me a smokin' deal on the first one they got. Called me and Mrs. Neo into the manager's office and closed the door. Since they are so rare, and collectible (there are two different versions, they forgot to mention that) and they know what a discriminating buyer I am, they wanted me to have a shot at buying the guitar before some collector snagged it. List price was $7,500 and if I acted NOW I could buy it for the incredible price of $7,500 - plus tax. It was worse than a car sales pitch. Oh, almost two years later it's still hanging there with the paint bubbling up from hanging on foam rubber display stands. Natural back for me as well, I have a wood fetish. Dark back is cool - and rare - but I wanna see a nicely figured grain instead.
romanos27 Posted May 1, 2009 Author Posted May 1, 2009 I get the feeling that the relative rarity of the darkback is what a lot of folks are drawn to. I have to admit that I am somewhat drawn - just 'cause it's different. But at the end of the day, I think my opinion is that the natural back just seems "right" on a gold top.
Rick Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 i don'tl ike Goldtops, bjut if i'll have to choose one...mmm...i'll go for the dark back!!!
