Jonnylasalle Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 OK, other then the coloration and pickguard what's the difference (tonally speaking) between a Dove and a Hummingbird?
modoc_333 Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 well the dove is maple for the back, sides, and neck. the bird is mahogany. this makes the dove much brighter, tighter and snappier.
TheLiveSoundGuy Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 That would be correct. The Dove is a 25-1/2" scale and The Hummingbird is a 24-3/4" scale length They both feature the "Big Sky" radius fingerboard edge as well.
Jayla Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Not to derail the thread, but could we throw another bird into the mix? How does the Firebird's specs compare to those of its feathered friends? FWIW I think they're all really fine guitars, and I'd have a hard time choosing one over the other (it'd all come down to the sound and feel of the individual instruments, if I ever had to choose).
onewilyfool Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Well, for one thing, I just measured my Firebird last night and found that the nut width is Just a hair under 1 3/4" very, very close to 1 3/4", which is fine by me....very comforatable guitar to play. I've not played it in about a month. so it took a little to warm up, but then.....fine sound....The maple on mine is not too bright....very soft sound...woody....nice...

Todd Wilson Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 The biggest difference is the sound. The Hummingbird has bigger deeper base and at least in my opinion more versatility. But for a balanced bright sound, the Dove might not can be beat. If you're use to Taylor's or Takamine's they sound more like Dove's to me than say, the Hummingbird, J45, or J200.
Jinder Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 The Dove is bigger, bolder and louder than the 'Bird, with more bottom and top end...the Bird is a very mid-focussed guitar with a light, warm, complex sound. The Dove has a very powerful sound, dramatic almost, whereas the Bird is more subtle in it's charms. I think it's hard to go wrong with either, both do what they do in a fabulous way...I think the only conclusion I can draw is that you need to spend a little time with both and see which one suits you best.
Jayla Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Thanks TLSG for those specs. One more question for the bird lovers: how do y'all feel about the Hummingbird artist? I played a really nice one a couple of weeks ago at a GC of all places and felt it was even nicer than Hummingbird MC that they had.

But man, what a looker! That particular one, at least, did not sound like a $3k guitar.

Al Zimmerman Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 And while we're at it' date=' what exactly are the differences between the Hummingbird Artist and the Hummingbird MC?[/quote'] Hi powerpopper, Here you can find a thread with lot of information about the HB Artist: http://forums.gibson.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=1079 Hope it helps. Wild_Rose Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 thanks everyone, I was wondering the same thing too!

The Artist (which I own) is somewhere between the Modern Classic and the True Vintage. True Vintage being the best sounding guitar I've ever played.
