Slick Joe Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 For simplicity's sake, I want my guitar to sound similar to dean deleo's sound (stone temple pilots). Right now I have an EMG 81 and EMG 85 setup in my guitar. What else, if anything, can I do to mess around with the tone? I know you can do stuff w/ capacitors and other stuff like that (installing everything is no problem, picking the stuff out is the tough part) so maybe u guys can help me out... The guitar is going into a marshall half stack btw. EDIT: Right now I'm just concerned with live sound.
DamienAzrael Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 First thing I'd to is take out the EMG's....I know he's got a black '78 Standard with rewired controls. The tone knob has been replaced with a push-pull pot...In the "up" position of his push-pull pot it places the two pickups out of phase...His pickups are stock...Hope that helps.
Rocky4 Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Are you talking studio or live? You'll never be able to duplicate a studio sound. Recording techniques come into play

DamienAzrael Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 He's a pic of his live right (blueprint) from Guitar World...May of 2007:

Ok so put stock pickups in, look into new pots. you have any sources on how he has his guitar wired? I can do pretty much any electrical work, im good with all that circuitry type stuff.
Slick Joe Posted April 27, 2009 Author Posted April 27, 2009 He's a pic of his live right (blueprint) from Guitar World...May of 2007: Dang thats aweseome haha. I actually have a similar pedal setup. Haha if only i had the money to get all them amps/preamps/heads and what not. Too bad that chart doesnt tell more about guitar internals, im assuming they are stock i guess.
DamienAzrael Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Yeah....I dunno too much else about the wiring other than what he did to it....I'm sure if you look around you can find some schematics close to what you need.

In fact the only mod I have performed to them is installing a 2nd batery so they work on 18V instead of 9... I have it that way on one of my EMG loaded axes (with 81/85). Have you played with the amps eq?

Have you played with the amps eq? Yeah I use two batteries instead of one. I was into metallica when I bought the EMG's haha. Now i never listen to em but whatev the EMG's are still cool. Yeah ive pretty much messed with everything and I got a decent sound I just wasnt sure if there was anything else i could do to the guitar itself

DamienAzrael Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 If I were you I'd put in a set of 490R and 498T pickups in your LP...I believe that's what are probably in his.

solacematt Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Also don't forget that he heavily used a flanger along with a chorus in STP (he didn't use them in conjunction with each other in Army Of Anyone or Talk Show).
