Towzend Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Does many of you like Donovan.. ive been a fan of his since the 60s.. i was wondering what guitar he's useing here, its the green & red one that he's seen quite often with..
G u e s t Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 . . He favors his custom-built Danny Ferrington guitar, which he nicknamed Kelly. (Acoustic Guitar July 1997)
Jayla Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Well, I like some of his songs: - Hurdy Gurdy Man - Epistle for Dippy - Sunshine Superman - Season of the Witch - etc. But I dislike some of his longer, fruity, fairy-taley numbers with princes, court jesters, wizards, and stuff like that.
august_reader Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I like the Allman Brothers' "Mountain Jam".
G u e s t Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Aaaaah..... First there WAS a mountain, then there was NO mountain, then there WAS..... . . . . I must go and put the Intergalactic Laxative on the deck and sing along.
Guest Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I always envision Mr Leitch with his 'Mellow Yellow' J-45: Hail Atlantis!
Hoss Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 He favors his custom-built Danny Ferrington guitar.. Hey! I have a friend with an old Danny Ferrington instrument. I'd forgot all about DF- "Luthier to the Stars" or some such title that he used to have. Though Donovan still gives me the heebie-jeebies. Even after all these years.
Fred_Engr Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 My favorite Donovan clip He has quite a sense of humor. Fred
Deadgrateful Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 He can be a bit much at times, but he wrote some real classics. Also, he has the mother of all chins...
onewilyfool Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I play two of his songs.... Lalena Try and catch the wind.
Jayla Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Try and catch the wind. This always seemed to me like a really well-done Dylan rip-off, and I mean that in a good way!
TWilson Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I learned four of his songs about 40 years ago and just stuck with them: Catch the wind The Gypsy Boy and I (I'm going to Try For the Sun...don't remember the real title) Why Do You Treat Me Like You Do? Yellow is the Color of My True Love's Hair You can play them as a medley.
Jinder Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I played a show with Donovan at the Midem festival in Cannes this year...he is a lovely guy, but above all his performance floored me-he was absolutely amazing. His stage presence is gargantuan, and he is a really, really, really great player. He flatpicked in a wonderful, clean-yet-intricate way, using very unconventional right-hand techniques...no supporting reaches or suchlike, just a very particular angle of pick attack which produced a wonderful tone. He plugged his Ferrington into an old Roland Jazz Chorus twin. Again, unconventional but highly effective.
Towzend Posted April 29, 2009 Author Posted April 29, 2009 Yep.. a rearlly nice guy.. i like playing his stuff, best album was "Fairy Tail" but i like his others aswell.. wish i could grow nails like him !! Yeah.. Nails, there a pain in the ***.. i try to grow them & they break or split.. ive dunked them with nail treatments.. dont work! i cant get on with them stick-on things, or plastic picky things.. I'm Doomed.. i tell ya Doooomed... Doooooomed!!!!:o

I've always thought he never got due credit for his unconventional and interesting playing and arrangements. A lot of people tend to write him off as a hippy goofball.
G u e s t Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Towzend - inspired (many years ago) by Jeff Beck, I use nails only, no pick. Several simple things to keep 'em good. [1] Keep 'em just as long as needed and always filed to length and smooth - don't get over long. [2] Use a hand-cream that does nails too (I use Vaseline Intensive Care) regularly. [3] Eat gelatin every other day (I chew 3 cubes of Rowntree jelly, yummy). [4] Wear gloves when washing up, cleaning the car and doing manual kinda work. I haven't used a pick in forty years, nor needed one.
Deadgrateful Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 I've seen the guy perform on many occasion, and to be honest, whilst I always enjoy a sing along, I find him to be a little egocentric and perhaps even annoying on occasion. I seen to recall (I may have been mildly under the influence at the time) being at the Rhythm Festival a couple of years back, and having to listen to him go on about how he taught Paul MCartney everything he knows, to the point where a few people were shouting at him to shut up and play already. Cool guy, but there's a reason why he was always a solo musician....
