Homz Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Drum solos are ok by me. So far as bass solos, I'd have to say it depends on what you mean by solo. If it's a little ditty like some the stuff in 'The Who' then I'm all for it, but there aren't too many bass solos with any length that keep my attention for very long. I'm sure there is some exception out there that violates my above point, like maybe something by the band 'Yes'.
FirstMeasure Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Both, I like a good Show Off solo as long as the player's into it and makes it cool. They don't all rock, of course, but I like to see 'em give it their best shot. Plus the rest of the band needs to take a break.
grampa Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Drum soloes may get a little long but that is part of showing off which is what a solo essentially is. For bass soloes, I always think of Entwhistle and "My Generation", probably the first bass solo in rock.
Thundergod Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I don't really like solos unless they are guitar, and even then it has to be a very good solo, not a pile of repetitive crap.
Corrosion of conformity Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I say bass solos! I love the sound of a bass guitar and they never get to solo...Drum solos can get pretty repetitive. It seems every concert I go to nowadays has a drum solo in it, but no one plays anything I would consider a bass solo.

Swmcv2007 Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I love both. I used to play the upright bass in high school and college jazz bands. In the world of rock, bass solo's aren't appropriate most of the time. Drum solos are ok but long ones tend to get boring because a lot of rock drummers have no idea what dynamics are. In the world of jazz, however, any solos from the rhythm section are AWESOME. Jazz solos tend to be more interesting to hardcore musicians. Most of those guys can really shred.
TinFish Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I don't know if I have ever heard a bass or drum solo that didn't seem to interrupt the song. I say they both suck.
L5Larry Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Drum solos are great for changing a broken string, or taking a leak in the middle of a song. I've also used them to get a drink from the bar. Bass solos are good for emptying a room.
rocketman Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Well I'm a huge Rush fan so I'm going with both...
