badjuju342 Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 'Tis true.... GM has declared the car company that introduced us to the musclecar is now to be buried: Pontiac. There will be no more hopes of a revival of such hallowed names as Firebird , GTO or "widetrack". I have one of the last years of the Trans Am and have decided to hang on to this extinct beast and preserve it.Whilst a lot of you folks are not car guys , it saddens me to see any American brand such as this die such a death and one must wonder how many more uniquely american brands such as Pontiac will see such an untimely death. While it is safe to say that Gibson ,Jack Daniels and Harley Davidson are here to stay, the winds of change are a blowin' and it might not be good....
G u e s t Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 . . Commiserations from over the water..... always wanted a GTO, kinda goat gas..... .
badjuju342 Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 The solution is simple. Buy! Buy! Buy! I am afraid it is a done deal . At least we have the Camaro, the Corvette, the Challenger, and the Mustang still available at dealerships.... for now.... I fear the Prius GT might be be as sporty as it gets in later years....
RichCI Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 It saddens me too, but it's not like GM and Chrysler haven't been in trouble for a long time, especially Chrysler which was bailed out once already just 20 years ago. I don't know what they're respective problems are, but if the companies can't survive on their own then, well, perhaps it's time to let them sink. It's hard to argue that it's just unions or oversees competition or the economic climate when Ford is doing relatively well.
The Holy Hand Grenade Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Good riddance, Maybe the American market would learn its lesson and stop being greedy. I mean why should i spend 100,000 on an American car when i can get a Honda for 10,000?
G u e s t Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 . . Because the American car has some attitude, a little hint of tan and muscle, that NO rice-burner ever will..... .
RichCI Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Very true back in the 60's but, as Bob Dylan says, "These time are a-changin'."
Homz Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 It saddens me too' date=' but it's not like GM and Chrysler haven't been in trouble for a long time, especially Chrysler which was bailed out once already just 20 years ago. [/quote'] A small point of order: Chrysler was doing just fine until the Daimler-Benz Corp. raided our 15 billion banked dollars. This occurred upon their take over in 98. Chrysler's design to build model was he envy of the world and Benz wanted it and the 15 billion. They got it because our then CEO (Eaton) sold us out in the Benz buyout for a 40 million departure umbrella. Ever since that year (1998) which was the most profitable in company history, Chrysler has been working out of a hole created by that.
charlie brown Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 This is SAD! My family has owned various Pontiac cars, since I was born...almost 60 years, now. Whatever the reasons, and "faults," it's still a "bummer!" CB
L5Larry Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I'm sad to see Pontiac go, my first two cars were Pontiacs. I Kind of understood GM killing off Oldsmobile, but I figured Buick would be next. I guess since Buick has such a niche market, they figured Pontiac ought to go next. There might be good news in it for me. My 1973 455 Trans Am probably just got more valuable, and I would think it will rise in value faster now that the Pontiac brand no longer exists. And to think I almost sold it a couple of months ago, I think I'll wait just a little longer and see what happens to the market.
wicked1 Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 The solution is simple. Buy! Buy! Buy! No, dear. The simple solution is for us to get our butts down to the family farm and grab that GOAT before it's dead!

Ignotum-Per-Ignocious Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 You post needs a bit of explaining. I would have to agree...
Murph Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I still think the "MONKEEMOBILE" was the coolest Pontiac ever. It is a shame, but I aqree if a Company goes under, so be it. I'm tired of bailouts.

They buy more Buicks than even Lexus vehicles . So , it can be said the Chinese saved Buick from certain doom......
wicked1 Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 You post needs a bit of explaining. My family has passed a 1969 or 1970 Pontiac GTO from one member to another since the day it was new. Still waiting for my turn....... First car I ever drove. *sigh*

badjuju342 Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 It's mint too. Garage kept for all those years and rarely driven. Doesn't matter , even rotted carcasses of that vintage fetch nice coin. Kinda like a beat-to- pieces'69 or '70 Gibson would...
BIGBENDS Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 ...you boys driving KIAs from now on? Hyundai RIP dear friend.
tazzboy Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 American Cars aren't built to last real long. Read the Consumer Report and what I mean.
Mr. Robot Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Believe it or not, this decision has hit us here in Australia aswell. You guys may not realise this, but the next Pontiac was going to be Oz built - the deal was done, the car designed and about to go into production. They announced the cancellation of the deal two days ago. We build a good quality car here and quite a bit of the design work for the Camaro is happening here.
