callen3615 Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 This was the first band I really got into and listened to every song they made. I watched every video on youtube with nirvana in it, ect. My project for a web design class was Nirvana. Every time I hear a song like lithium in the car I cant help but jamming out, with my trusty drum kit/ steering wheel. I still can listen to them for hours.
Rockin365 Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 I like Nirvana, Have you seen this bit of footage of Kurt. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3Gqsh22DE0
The Holy Hand Grenade Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 I never found a Guy who blew his head away quite inspirational in my opinion.

daveinspain Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 I liked them... Something about the rawness was appealing...
callen3615 Posted April 29, 2009 Author Posted April 29, 2009 I liked them... Something about the rawness was appealing... +1. They didnt care if you liked them or not. They liked their music and thats what they cared about.
vagabond Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Remember how video killed the radio star? Well Nirvana killed the glam-rockstar. And whether or not they did it through musical vision and talent, or they were just the catalyst for inevitability, you have to give them credit where credit is due. I can hear Nirvana in every alt rock band from the 90s. From the Ataris to Weezer, they influenced everybody in that generation.

The glam part of rock needed to go away - the BIG Hair and makeup. But the fact that guitar started to take the back seat in music is the part that I didn't like. Call me crazy, but I liked the times when people like Jimmy Page was the guitarest and he was just as big and famous as Robert Plant - in some ways more perhaps. There were others in the same camp as them. When the nirvana grunge scene hit, that all but went away and it has taken over a decade to bring the guitar back to the forefront. That's how I see it anyways and it's part of the reason why I don't care for a lot of new music even today even though guitar and lead guitar is coming back.

When Nirvana hit the scene, the shift didn't so much as go from "guitar-centric" to "not guitar-centric," it went from "image oriented music" to "music oriented music." Glam rock was all about the hair, the sex, the drugs, and the money. Nirvana made it about the music. Just like classic rock was always about the music, and not about "the guitar." This is why I'm so frustrated with the current alt rock and punk scenes. They've shifted back to being image oriented again. Only instead of being glamorous it's all about dissension from the norm. That's why we see all these "rock stars" with black frullets, red highlights, wearing black straight-legged jeans with holes in them. Emocore is the the new glam-rock. I'm just waiting for the day when my generation's Nirvana finally makes the scene.

vagabond Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_suicides Yeah, if you commit suicide you're incapable of inspiring people. Don't be daft.

Give me a quote of something he said, but not your opinion. Perhaps I did miss the point because I never liked anything about nirvana's music. "music oriented music" give me a break. If it was about the music then they should have played something good. Sorry, but I'm a guitar player and the music I enjoy the most has a good guitar focus. I like to see concerts where the guitar player steps up to play a great guitar solo - or even runs all over the stage while soloing. You and I are just different in our opinions about music and what music should be. It's best to let it rest as it is.

The Mick Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Eye liked them I thought they had a very original sound and a lot of feeling in their songs.
Tim Plains Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 I like Nirvana - don't listen to them too often but I still like them. Kurt was murdered, by the way...

Also, the whole of Led Zeppelin refused to release singles because they felt their music should be listened as a cohesive whole, a single entity. I have a feeling that this attitude didn't end at songs to albums. Yeah....It's quite pathetic. Depression isn't pathetic. And even if it were, Nirvana's music != Kurt Cobain's depression. There have been a few songs written in the past century that really reach out and speak to the generation of the time. The Ramones called out "HEY! HO! LETS GO!" Nirvana did it with "Hello... Hello... Hello..." Do you think Billy Corgan would've ever stood up and screamed "Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage" if Nirvana hadn't done it first? Nobody is claiming Kurt Cobain was a good guitarist. But he was definitely an influential and powerful musician who wrote some of the 90s' most important music.
DamienAzrael Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Murdered ?....Right...Don't tell me you believe that whole Courtney killed him crap....The guy was a druggie loser.
Swmcv2007 Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 I have nothing against them I just can't listen to them. It just sounds lazy to me. If I want to listen to some 90s grunge I'll break out my Soundgarden cd's.
DamienAzrael Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 If I want to listen to some 90s grunge I'll break out my Soundgarden cd's. Yeah !!!...Now there's a good band !!! ;)
The Mick Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Murdered ?....Right...Don't tell me you believe that whole Courtney killed him crap....The guy was a druggie loser. Eye think he's being sarcastic. Pat Smear did it he killed Darby Crash as well
Tim Plains Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Yeah, I think she killed him. Soundgarden - sorry, but I hate Cornell's voice. I love RATM but I can only listen to Audioslave in moderation. He's such a whinny little b*tch. Just my opinion...
