Old Woody, New Woody

saunders

Recommended Posts

I have been trying for a few days to find a resource that can help identify when and why the retail price for a Woody Guthrie Southern Jumbo dropped from $4226 to $3008. Can anyone shed some light on that subject? Are the guitars different? Why mess with the value of a guitar like that, especially one as fine as a WG SJ? What gives? ... Anyone?... Anyone?

my guess is... they can't sell it. smells like a deal. offer them 2500.00 cash. times are tough but you know that. rare and desirable guitars on ebay are selling for half their original asking price. deals are there to be had if you're in the market. don't over analyze or fixate on one particular guitar. you can find more than 1 example of a certain model for sale. shop around. hope that helps a little.

good luck in your quest.

As jannusguy says - these economic conditions dictate price deflation. When a guitar is a better price, it doesn't mean it is lesser quality -- it is usually a reflection of something being sold for its actual value rather than a perceived value.

I am selling off almost all my guitars at the moment and I am achieving good prices, but only because the bulk of my collection is well known to people who have been playing on it for a period of time. If I had to go on the open market right now, I wouldn't be selling a thing.

Thanks guys. You might be surprised by the market, at least on eBay. I have sold about 7 or 8 guitars in the past month. Some people try to give you the economic sob story in trying to get you to virtually give away a guitar, but overall, I have had decent luck. The trick is picking a guitar that will sell and free shipping helps.

This morning I received an email from Gibson customer service indicating that the inlays and the pickguard had been changed in the Woody. He didn't say how, nor when. I dont know what they could do to a basic tiger stripe guard, but the inlays may be made of cheaper stuff.

I haven't been buying and selling much lately. I've got some Indonesian thing on ebay right now that I paid $50 for (non functioning truss rod) and I threw it on ebay with a 99 cent opening bid. Crap shoot; the worst I can do is lose $50 and instead I might make $20 or $30.

I don't see the prices dropping on ebay. There seem to be more tales of "I swore I'd never sell this but I need the money" but yet they have opening bids or Buy It Now prices at or above market value.

Sometimes ya get lucky I guess. I bought one new through Guitar Center for $2100 and couldn't be happier with it. It was produced early in 2006 and the quality is top notch.

Yes indeed thank God a fella can still get a Woody!

" It was produced early in 2006 and the quality is top notch."

That is excellent news. Mine (on the way) was produced in March of 07, and I'll be checking it closely based on my recollections of my former '04 WG. That guitar was great for recording.

The WG price drop was baffling considering it came from Gibson, often associated with greed and the home of eighty dollar T-shirts. No offense to you die-hard Gibson fans, but that is the perception among some folks based on the internet policy devised a few years ago, that and the shirts. Me, I am just coming back around and realizing that I need a slope shouldered Gibson, since it is the benchmark.

I really like mine. The combination of short scale and round shoulder dread body really appeals to me and produces an excellent sound. Mine arrived new in the box with phosphor bronze strings. I gave them a couple of days and switched to 80/20s which I prefer. I wish I had been exposed to these Gibson short scale dreads a long time ago, I would have saved myself a lot of time and money...

Well, an 07 WG touched down briefly yesterday and I must say I find distinctions between this factory floor job and my old '04 limited edition. It sounded good, no doubt, but the tuners were downgraded in addition to the case, inlay and pickguard. The finish as not as rich looking and the back had some markings that were not very confidence inspiring with respect to its ruggedness. Once you've experienced both types of WG SJ, the distinctions become apparent. Its a shame, because I'd hate to see these newer ones drag down the superior original run of WG's on the resale market.

sorry. It was a joke for people who frequent the Les Paul forum. In 2006, most Les Paul models went from a weight relieved body to a chambered body. It's been the subject of heated debate over there for quite a while now. I just thought it would be funny, because obviously every acoustic has a "chambered" body.
