The RabsWood that never was

Ive been going over some old documents recently and found pictures of a guitar that I finished but seemed doomed from the start. Some of you that have been on here long enough may even remember it.  I think I did the neck twice, as a consequence of what I did the upper frets were unreachable so I had to re shape the lower horn too...  From what I remember in the end the scale length was off too I think at which point I just took a jigsaw to it and ended the pain 😄

Thing is I made this over ten years ago now. It was still early on for me and I guess at least I learned a lot from the experience. But in looking at it with my older more experienced eyes, I actually really like the shape. Its like a DC crossed with a PRS but leans way more towards the DC side.

Oddly I have never made one like it since but am now thinking of about it  🙂  What do you reckon of the design?

Watch out G has proof you are making guitars with similar shapes as theirs. If they will try to sue PRS, they will probably go after anyone.

Nah... Ive been posting  my builds on here for over a decade now and have even asked to make sure they were ok with it.. I have never actually made a Gibson copy (even then I did start one but it would still have my logo on the headstock and was intended for personal use, theres a thread on that somewhere) and while my guitars were obviously influenced by Gibson they are also their own thing and have their own headstock design too..

Plus im not even in business any more really and only made one offs, never a line of guitars. I do have more to make but have been waiting for some physical issues to sort themselves out but when I do, I will probably just give them away to people. Making and selling guitars in todays market is just not worth it any more.

PRS had different heads and they tried to sue em and lost. 2 thumbs up for G losing that. Yes selling even nice production guitars today is a hassle to sell used.

Cool axes. I used to think double cuts were strange looking, but I like them now, but I’m an all acoustic schmuck now.

I think I recall that one…perhaps it was the first time you really pushed on with incorporating colour and more complex angles. The light reflections, especially on the back, show just what a challenge it was…but with all you learned later, yeah it would be a great endeavour to make this all come together as you had originally imagined it.

I checked on my DC, the cutout levels are symmetric (even if the horns aren't).
That means big "G" won't be after you. (And PRS is prolly after Orianthi, so you're safe there too.)

Killer top!! 👍

love the shape of the cutaways and pickguard

I think a lot of people would like that design. It’s kindof familiar but new at the same time

Cheers... And thats exactly what I went for with my builds.

Designing something totally new and that works sitting down, standing up and balances properly and still looks good is really really hard.. So I went for familiar but still their own thing. Its why its never been a secret where my inspiration as a maker came from but from the very start I never wanted to be that guy making Gibson and Fender copies. Didnt see the point. You want a Gibson or a Fender theres loads of them out there.. So I tried my best to at very least be imaginative with my hardware choices and more diverse with my wood choices.

I am about to get over a big period of bother in my life (I hope) which will leave me a bit more free to do stuff like this again.. Hopefully soon. I miss it.
