Gilliangirl
Is that Rhode Island? I thought Newport was in California? Forgive me, geography is not my strong suit. There is some sort of Folk Fest going on there in August..... you should see the line-up of talent! "Help Gillian Welch and the Dave Rawlings Machine celebrate five decades of folk music in historic Newport, RI, Aug 1 & 2 alongside co-founder and legend Pete Seeger, The Decemberists, Joan Baez, Neko Case, Arlo Guthrie, Brett Dennen, Iron & Wine, Fleet Foxes, Guy Clark, The Del McCoury Band, Avett Brothers, and many, many more." Holy smoke! You guys in R.I. are some lucky lucky folks! Anyone here going to this? I know I can't complain because I just got to see Jorma. Hey Gillian! How about sitting down long enough to put out another album?

larryp58
Yea, it's Rhode Island. I went there in the late '70's. I was in the Navy. There's a little submarine base there. Cool folk line-up!! Wish I could go!
Hoss
...Plus two of my very Favorites-- Tim Eriksen and Dirk Powell. Dirk Powell is touring with Joan Baez (?) as her backup. I was fortunate to spend a weekend with both these guys plus Riley Baugus at an 'in depth' three day workshop. About 10 of us plus them. (Of course, I get to see and pick a bit with Riley and Dirk at Fiddletunes this year... )
Geoffrey Lawton
I was married there - it's where my dad grew up. Great seaside town. Summer home to some of the turn-of-the-century NY robber barrons. Some good surfing, too (well... for the east coast, anyway). g.

grampa
The Newport Folk Festival has been going on since the 50's. It's legendary. Bob Dylan "went electric" at Newport in '65.

fortyearspickn
Yup, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs... Was 'in' up in the Northeast before they invented Woodstock. I guess they sort of invented music festivals. They have a jazz one too. Or did. Got my first tattoo there in the late 60s in the Navy. There was a hole in the wall bar that sold draft beer for a nickel !! Probably only 7 ounces, and an off brand. But, no one cared:) It was a time of peace and love. Not. But, yes a truly beautiful town.
