Devil Seed
I've been gassing a black SG Standard for a few weeks now with no real intent to purchase. Perusing the auction sites and dusting off the Black Sabbath dvds have been the extent of my gas. Until today! Yesterday I stopped into the local guitar shop for strings and on the used wall was a black '07 SG Standard with what appeared to be the darkest Rosewood I'd ever seen. The board looked like Ebony but I didn't think they offered that option(?). I'm very familiar with Rosewood and Ebony but opted against the investigation and decided to play it. Well, I was blown away and it wasn't even plugged in. The notes flew off the guitar and the set up was very good. The overall condition of the SG was "used" at best with no chunks or major dings, only light swirls just about everywhere. Remember, it's a black guitar. I assumed it was the previous owners "out and about the house" guitar. I've played many NEW SG's off the wall but this one was clearly different and had mojo to it. Simply put I just loved playing it; listening & feeling the tones in my fingers. The price tag was $999. A new SG Standard goes for over $1500. Is the price too steep? Should I turn away and keep and eye out for a "new" one with "mojo" or should I take this monster home? Financially I'll screw myself but live. I'd bet we've all been there before. My forum name makes me sound like a kid but I couldn't come up with anything better that wasn't already taken. I've got 25+ years experience pro & semi-pro. Your avatar has been distracting me from your posts all evening. Seriously, thanks! I'm leaning in that direction.
Swmcv2007
I was in the same EXACT situation with a 04 ebony standard with a rosewood fretboard that is as dark as you say that one is. I paid $900 and feel like every penny was worth it. I love this guitar and no other guitar feels right in my hands.

Sin
If you can live after the purchase buy it, take another hour or so double checking why such a good guitar would be sold. plug it in also, from what you said I'm not sure you did or not, just to at least test the electronics, well you know the drill like you said My forum name makes me sound like a kid but I couldn't come up with anything better that wasn't already taken. I've got 25+ years experience pro & semi-pro. I got mine because of this mysterious dark rose wood, its also a black sg, never regretted it, shes been on the road with quite some time now. Devil Seed
It was gone. I played a few new SG's, standards and reissues, which did nothing for me. All had a completely different feel than the used one and didn't appear to be built as well. After 20 minutes of playing the new SG's, a few used Strat's and a reversed V, I picked up two packs of strings and headed home.

MikeRom
It was gone. Summ*****! I just saw this post and was going to suggest that you get it before it's gone, as happened to someone one the Les Paul side recently. Sorry dude. I guess it wasn't meant to be. If you're ever interested in a guitar in the future, immediately ask about the store's hold policy. IF they have one, use it. I saw a guy loving a guitar one day at a store, saying he was gonna a get it. Played for quite a while, couldn't keep his hands or ears off it. Went to the counter - sold on the internet while he was playing around with it. Brutal, frustrating disappointment. Hold policy...
jimmiJAMM
simply put' date=' it's the character of the guitar[/quote'] This facet of guitar mystique is rarely mentioned around here. I believe that there are unseen forces at work when it comes to beloved musical instruments. The mere fact that the main piece of our instruments was once a living, breathing tree is only part of the equation. Especially when it comes to used, vintage guitars there's definitely something to this mojo vibe that, as far as I'm concerned, is absolutely real. Other's have played it, thereby imbibing it with their heart, soul and energy. Their... mojo, if you will. I believe that there's a spiritual residue which is left behind and quite palatable at times. Sort of an imprint of past lives that dwell within. Devil Seed
Having played one and confirming, for myself, the "mojo" lives within the SG Standard line will make the hunt more enjoyable. I'll play any that pop up, new or old. This facet of guitar mystique is rarely mentioned around here. I believe that there are unseen forces at work when it comes to beloved musical instruments.
