I'm sure those battery fires are a tiny percentage of vehicles sold but there's no putting them out. The technology is in its infancy... the problem is that our government is FORCING us to move toward EV's, (in California, at least, ALL VEHICLES sold must be "Zero Emissions" by 2035). EV's will get better....but we'll still need to GREATLY increase our electric grid in order to support them, (and those stupid windmill farms aren't gonna cut it). I find them good if you're out for fun or whatever....but not practical for your only vehicle. I'm only well versed in transit buses, and since they're partially funded by our taxes, (80% from the Federal Government), and they're REQUIRED to provide emergency service in case of disasters....and EV's will be worthless to move people out of disaster areas. When they quit using Oil & Coal to make Electricity I’ll buy an Electric Truck. Edited September 4 by Larsongs

Tman
My late wife and I were early Tesla adopters. After my 2016 X burned in the fire (along with everything else I owned at the time) I replaced it with a 2018X I love it. Charge it on solar so I don't don't pay anything to run it. Doesn't smell bad either. Looks like I'm the only one here that likes the Cybertruck. Oh well.
SteveFord
How long does it take to charge on the solar panels? I don't really have an opinion on that Cybertruck, if you can afford and like it, why not. It's probably a lot of fun to drive. Tman
2 minutes ago, SteveFord said: How long does it take to charge on the solar panels? The way I'm configured is that power generated by the solar panels gets routed to Southern California Edison which in turns feeds me the power as I am on the grid. So I can't measure time to charge based on the source of the electricity as it all comes from SCE (if that hopefully makes sense). My charger usually puts on between 25-33 miles per hour. I get a rebate from SCE each end of year so the panels have been paying for themselves and that includes the Tesla.

We have solar that pretty much takes care of our house....but adding an EV will put us way over the top,

How are you getting a rebate? I had my system installed about five or six years ago, and until they changed my TOU this year, I've been averaging $600-$700 in credits left over at the end of the year, and with the exception of the first year (when they sent me a check for $70), I have never received a rebate of any kind. PG&E doesn't charge me for electricity all year.... in January, (just so happens my system wen online in January), they either charge me or credit me for the difference between what I produced and what I used.....usually pretty close, (within $50) If I had a newer AC unit, I could probably get a credit every year, but my unit is 45 years old. Larsongs
Keep in mind Edison still buys Electricity created with Oil & Coal. Even if you have Solar.

That's what I meant. When it is all done at the end of the year I get a check from them, like your $70 but it has been consistent for us (I may not have described it correctly).

Understood but at least I can reconcile in my mind that an equivalent amount of electricity that I use I also produce for them. So to me it's one small step for a man.

Aah, you have PG&E. I have SoCal Edison. That probably explains it. I just put in a new AC this year, and with the change in TOU, I will probably wind up coming much closer to breaking even, even with the more efficient AC unit. I'm seriously considering putting in some batteries, but I'd need way too many to be able to go completely off-grid. But Edison is so bad, it's still tempting. Larsongs
California may be better than most other States but Fossil Fuels still make up a large amount to produce Electricity. Much of their Electricity is bought from other States who don’t have the same practices as California. I love the concept of Electric vehicles. I’m not in favor of the things they do to make the Vehicles, including, some of their Content, Child Slavery & the Electricity produced with Fossil Fuel to power them at this time. I don’t view them as Green & users of total renewable Clean power. That said, my kids just leased 2 Polestar’s for my Teenage Grand kids. The deals were too good to pass up. Phil, I considered a couple of Tesla batteries, (here we are again with the dreaded Musk company), but the cost was very high….but worse, is that I was told they would have to be replaced in ten years! So, I got a 22kW Generac home generator….it powers my entire house, including the AC. Uses natural gas and comes on automatically when the power goes out, and shuts off when the power comes back on.
