Nick Beach
I'm ready to get another SG standard. Currently I've got the heritage cherry one, but I need another one for different tunings on stage. But I'm not sure whether to go with the black or natural burst. I'm pretty sure that the black has thicker paint on the guitar than the natural burst. I know thicker paint will change the sound, but is it all that noticeable? I can tell a teeny tinny difference when I play them at GC or some place, but I'm scared I'll get one and it will sound way different after I get used to it. So can anyone help? Twiz
I really don't think that you'll be able to tell a difference in the sound between black or natural burst. Maybe something slight, but I doubt it. I say just get the one that you like. One thing to remember is your audience (unless it's made up of guitar nerds like us) isn't going to be able to tell any difference in sound either. If it were me, I'd get the natural burst. That's a cool finish.
Tim Plains
I'd probably go Natural Burst, as well...but that's a tough choice because they both look great. That tiny difference you're noticing can also just be the tonal difference between two guitars and have nothing do to with the paint.
hbomb76
If there's ANY difference in tonality, it'll be because of the wood most likely. The finish isn't going to make a noticeable difference. I would go black on the alternate tuning one. Something about a black SG... H-Bomb

By the way, in my country Ebony is cheaper than Heritage cherry and Natural.
Geff
What HBomb said +1. The difference caused by natural variations in two different pieces of wood will be far greater than the difference caused by an imeasurably small difference in the thickness of the nitro finish. Take two of exactly the same model and finish and they will be slightly different. That would be true even manufacture was very consistent and if QC was unbelievably tight (which it isnt). A guy at the shop I was playing it in said the paint could effect it because it takes more of it to make a black guitar; and the extra paint would effect how the wood reacts. Geff
There is no guarantee the guy in the shop knows anything. Is he even a guitar player? He could be a drummer or maybe just a salesman!
