Sgt. Pepper
I have a Honda Civic hybrid. I get about 46 miles to the gallon. Gas around where I live is $2.89 a gallon, and I have a 10 gallon tank, so do the math, and it cost around 29 bucks to fill it up. When you have an electric car, you plug it into a cable attached to your house, and you really don’t see what it costs other than when you pay your electric bill, and it’s still a mystery, so does anybody really know how much it cost to charge a fully electric car from dead to full? Larsongs
My Grand daughter got a new Polestar a few months ago to go back & forth to College. She goes to USC in L.A. With the Gov't subsidies & a healthy Costco Rebate the deals were so attractive they got 2. She & some friends went to San Diego to hang out with some of their friends. When it was time to leave she had to get a charge for her Car. She finally found a place. She had to do a Super Charge. She had to wait around for an an hour & it cost about $60.00 for an 80% charge. My Son in law drives the other one back & forth for his business. He charges it at home overnight about once a week. With transportation it usually comes down to "best deal" for most. I'm old School. I drive a Chevy Short Bed Silverado & an older Corvette. I'm good with both of them. Edited October 20 by Larsongs
Sgt. Pepper
For $60 I can get 2 fill ups, and my car tells me I get about 500 miles on a full tank. My favorite BS is I’m buying a new car with better gas mileage and man I’m gonna save so much money on gas. Maybe, but did you factor in now you most likely are gonna also now have a car payment for 4 to 6 years? How long is it going to take to recoup the money you are saving on gas with the added cost of your new car payment? Obviously it’s different if it’s your first car or your current car is on its last leg. Edited October 20 by Sgt. Pepper

gearbasher
My old Volvo gets about 15 MPG. I drove a whopping 41 miles last year (bicycled over 14,000). I don't even know what gas costs around here. No need for me to get another car, gas or electric. My only complaint is that my insurance cost me about $30 a mile.

No way in hell I’m getting in my bike and risking my life on Hiway 17 with all the SC old drunks that drive with a shotgun road dog, or five. RBSinTo
Electric. Definitely electric. I mean who wants to hook up a propane tank every time they want to play their Telecaster? Wait. Chief, you were talking about cars? Oh. Never mind. RBSinTo 2

ksdaddy
I currently have: 2011 Impala, 3.5L, flies like it's tail is on fire and gets almost 30mpg on the highway. Incognito black 4 door with big tunes. 1984 Ford F-150 step side 4x4, 300-6 with 4 speed. Red of course. I have no idea what it gets for mileage. It looks cool. 1988 Cadillac Brougham D'Elegance. See above comment. 1949 Oldsmobile Model 76. I haven't driven it enough to check the mileage. It's only gone 61,000 miles in 75 years. Flathead 6 with Hydramatic Drive. I owned it from 1990-92 and bought it back in 2022. 1988 S-10 Blazer. My father bought it in 1990. Patched and patched some more. My son in law and I spent half the day today putting in a new floor pan and body mount on one side. The floor had collapsed and it was making a growling noise going down the road. I will keep putting it back together as long as I am able. I really love that little POS. I have been saving for a new truck for quite some time and right now I've got about half a new Tundra in cash, but I can't bring myself to do it. I like my old stuff. Meanwhile my wife just bought a new black Forerunner. But she deserves it. She puts up with ME. Most of my vehicles are old enough to not have too much high tech stuff. The Impala, yeah, but that car is stupid easy to work on if you have access to youtube.

ksdaddy
I just googled and apparently they now have a rechargeable battery. Older ones took AA or AAA, a half dozen or so. I must have been thinking of something else. An old Casio keyboard maybe. Something that takes that many batteries gives my wallet the chills. Dub-T-123
I just got done renting a new Prius for over 9 weeks with a whole lot of miles in that time and long story short… If I were in the market to buy a new car I would be most interested in a Toyota or Honda hybrid I think with where the tech is currently at, hybrid is the way to go. You have the best balance of range, fuel efficiency, and emissions. This is from a standpoint of just a daily commuting vehicle or sortof a “grocery-getter”, not really considering high performance as a requirement at all
Tman
Gas where I live is $5 a gallon. My solar pays for my Tesla and house electricity about half of the months (not summer). I have done the math. It's about $2.50/gallon equivalent to drive the Tesla.

Out of curiosity is your Tesla one of the more high performance variants? I imagine a dual motor takes a lot more juice than the bog standard model One of my clients had a really cool Tesla Roadster btw I think you’d have really thought it was cool. It’s the only one I’ve ever seen and we kinda live in areas with lots of rare cars

Great gas mileage, but it’s a stupid looking car, and what idiot designed the back window with a bar across the middle of it blocking your view? Unless you saw the hybrid emblem on the back of my Civic you wouldn’t know it’s a hybrid. $5 a gallon Tman, I’ll take 10 please. Um no. Glad I’m out of Cali if that’s where you are. I hate this area of SC, but unfortunately it’s home now. Edited October 21 by Sgt. Pepper

A safe, well-established hybrid model is the way to go, if you are in the market for a new car. We operate gasoline powered vehicles here on Blackwater Drive. An old BMW Z3, a 2019 Ford Transit van, and the 2015 Suzuki enduro bike. We'll probably drive/ride those until the day we die. But IF I were to need a replacement car, I would very likely go for a hybrid. Now, a straight-up EV? Never. It would be a fine local commuter, yes. But the cost is prohibitive, and it's not practical for cross-country journeys of any reasonable distance. 🤨
