Ebony Block SGs

Just wondering what do you guys think. I'm not sure think this inlayed chunk of wood belongs on an SG. It just looks out of place to me.

Anyone know what year models these blocks were mounted on... and why?

I'm not sure, but what I'm thinking is they may have originally been machined for Bigsbys, maybe their supplier ran out, and they had to use the regular vibrato units, and the ebony blocks were to cover up the holes. I remembe seeing these on 48th st. in NYC in the seventies, and I thought they were pretty cool, although I did like the Maestro better.

Personally, I like the ebony block tailpiece. It seems to be a transitional model between the sideways vibrola and the lyre-engraved one. I like the flat arm too--the adjustable length is a cool feature. I'm guessing they were used between '62 and '63--'61's and some '62's have the sideways vibrola, and the '64 and later ones I've seen have the lyre (and every once in a while, one will turn up with a Bigsby).
