Homz
I'm going with the , not mentioned, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd. They are this obscure British group that has sold upteenzillion albums.

Jesus Is Dead In My Basement
I voted for Geddy Lee, If i had saw Paul McCartney i would have voted for him but i did not see him at first.
wicked1
I'm going with the ' date=' not mentioned, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd. They are this obscure British group that has sold upteenzillion albums. [/quote'] I'm going to shock Homz by agreeing with him! I think playing bass & singing is a major accomplishment in itself, but if I had to pick a "best," it would be Roger Waters. (And I'm not a big Pink Floyd fan)
djroge1
I went with Paul. Roger Waters would be a good choice too I believe. The only problem I have with Waters is that I read somewhere that David Gilmour actually played all of the "hard" bass parts on their albums - probably the fretless parts. I'm sure Roger learned how to play them for concerts though.
bol316
Tough call here. Sting, Claypool, Lee and Waters came to mind. I'm gonna go with Sting (more the Police years though). Waters rarely had brilliant basslines and was a good (not great) singer. Claypool is my 2nd choice. His voice is grating after awhile (though I like and own Primus and Oysterhead) but his bass playing is out of sight. Lee is a great bass player but a subpar singer talent and voice wise. But Sting had/has the double package. I dont see how anyone can deny Sting can both play AND sing. Whether or not you like WHAT he plays and sings, thats a whole other arguement. BIGBENDS
Phillip Lynott wrote, played, and sang with his soul. The others did as well, but Phil music hits closer to home with me. He gets my vote.

Thundergod
What... no Kurt Cobain? You gotta admit his guitar playing skills sucked so bad he could be considered a bassist. I voted for Phil Lynott, my close second would be Sting.

rocketman
I'm bumping this up. Geddy Lee defines progressive bass. Chris Squire also comes to mind, but I'd pick Geddy over him because Chris uses a pick (sorry, a bass should be played with the fingers).
EVOL!
rick danko of The Band is damn good too Canadian Rick Danko was ace. One of my all time favorite bassists and singers. Every vocal had such an honest delivery.
Basshole
I love geddy lee, he can play really hard lines and sing at the same time but his voice is not my favorite. Phil has soul in voice, he can plays some nice bass lines and maintain heaviness.
Buc McMaster
How about Chicago's current bassist Jason Scheff? And for that matter, Chicago's original bassist, Peter Cetera? Neither of these guys is a slouch!!
mr newhaven
show me one other bassist with more critical acclaim...record sales...fanatical fan base...catalog of music...number one hits...catchy songs...and ERA-Defining presence than Paul McCartney and I'll call you a liar!!!!!!!!!
