Playing "Forever Young"?

Has anyone here ever tried to play along with the recording of Bob Dylan's “Forever Young” - the acoustic version from the Planet Waves album? I have the sheet music (from “The Definitive Bob Dylan Songbook”). I've found some songs in that book where the printed music was in a different key than the recording, and that's immediately clear when I try to play along – the book is also pretty good about noting alternate tunings, etc. This particular song sounds close but not quite right – like maybe the recording was mastered at a slightly off speed? I've experience that before (with the Rolling Stones Beggars Banquet – mastered at an incorrect speed until the SACD hybrid re-master.) The Planet Waves disc I'm using is also a SACD hybrid re-master, and a couple of other songs I learned from the album (Going Going Gone and Wedding Song) sound right. Sorry if this is a dumb question – I've only been playing for a couple of years (started at the tender young age of 49) and playing along with records is as close as I get to playing with other people at this point...

That is a problem when trying to play along with a record, there could be a lot of factors to change the pitch.

A famous example is Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue". Several tracks were recorded at a slightly wrong tape speed and when it was mixed it was played at the correct speed. The pitch was about a half step off or so. It was corrected on the new re-releases. I believe that there are some modern new digital stuff that can correct pitch but I'm not sure what it is.

By the way, "Forever Young" is my favorite Dylan song.

hlarry, welcome to the wonders of the studio mixing board, huh. I always sought & seek live versions of any songs when I was/am really into playing along with a recording artist, at least the odds are better. But, even that can throw you. The things technology can do. Sometimes I notice on my own efforts, if I go from an analog and then send the mix to Pro Tools there is the slightest unintended # as the end result only noticed if I play along once more right then and there. Plus, as grandpa mentioned, the "artist's nuance" in tuning & playing is sometimes a true part of the artist's style, Dylan lived it. Your concern on this one, is a problem we all will forever encounter from time to time. Right now, you play along with records, I play along with my own recorded tracks. Aint the real thing is it!

Sorry, I just realized I was completely off topic here! Yes, that Dylan site is very good. Someone put a lot of work into that, and it's one of the few that have remained open, thank goodness. Forever Young is a great song.
