Hamish
Hi , i've being playing guitar since last christmas (acoustic and electric) but the guitar(s) arent exactly .. great :D http://guitare-stratocaster.jim-harley.audiofanzine.com/produits/index,idproduit,54674,mao,stardust_st30.html I think this is the amp: http://combo-guitare.jim-harley.audiofanzine.com/produits/index,idproduit,113552,mao,classic_15_reverb.html anyway i want to buy an SG but i dont know how much difference there is between the gibson and the SG and epiphone SG , i could save for gibson but is it worth it :D (but then might take me 1 year or more :S). I would happily buy the SG Epiphone http://guitare-sg.epiphone.audiofanzine.com/produits/index,idproduit,46992,mao,g400_vintage.html If they had it in these colours: http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/SG/Gibson-Custom/SG-Standard-Reissue-VOS.aspx http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/SG/Gibson-USA/SG-61-Reissue.aspx or something close I was also thinking of getting a marshall amp to go with it which is not too big and can give me some AC/DC acide. PS: If comparing epiphone and gibson on the gibson forums could get my post closed or get me banned please tell me
Reynolds_wRap
It won't get you banned....... The Epi SG would be alright for just starting out. The older Epiphone fadeds with the neck binding seemed to have played better from what I remember. I have a Gibson SG Standard, and a Faded. You would most likely be better off getting a Gibson. I am only saying this, because you will eventually want a Gibson and it can save you a couple hundred bucks from not buying the Epiphone in the first place. Now for the AC/DC sound with the amp. I personally couldn't get any sound I wanted until I played a Metropoulos amp. I built a kit which ran me about $900 which is expensive for alot of people. They are replicas of 1960's and 70's Marshall amps and are the best to replicate it in my opinion. I would only recommend some type of tube amp for AC/DC tone and stay away from Solid State stuff. redraptor
From what I hear, the Epi G-400 SG is a GREAT guitar when upgraded slightly. But by the time you lay down the doh for that and upgrade it to be on par with a Gibson, it will be about the same amount. BUT (again from what I hear) the Epi is great for the price and for beginners, but if you want something that is held on a slightly better regard and going to last you a VERY long time, go for the Gibson. Either way both guitars are great pieces, and I doubt you will be disappointed with either.
jimmiJAMM
I wish I had a dollar for every time this question is asked. Go for the Gibson and never look back.
Geff
If you can afford it, there are a number of good options at arund 1000 dolars from Gibson. I wouldnt buy a faded special though even at the new low price of $699. If you cant afford a good Gibson (by which I mean anything but the faded special), the G400 is a great guitar for the money and the only upgrade you might want to do is pickups and pots at a later date. There are plenty of working musicians who perform live with Epis. Of course this is the Gibson Forum so you may not get a balanced view from everyone. Best advice though is to go to a big guitar shop and see for yourself what feels best to you. If you find you actually like a Gibson faded special and can get it at the online price $699 from an actual shop, it could represent the best value for your money. Alternatively you may try an Epi and love it in which case save a couple o hundred dollars. My advice though dont buy an Epi G310 or any of the cheaper models with a bolt on neck. They are definately not in the same league.
FennRx
this is sort of a jerk reply, but i think its true (someone told me this a long long time ago when i was in your shoes): if you have to ask, get the Epiphone
the guitar butcher
save up for a Gibson SG special whether it is fade or not they are great guitars. They are not that different from a standard. I have a black SG special and it is awsome it even sounds better than some stanards ive played at Guitar Center. Specials are also Cheap
