First Post, First Gibson (RJ L-1)

Hey all! Long time lurker, first time poster. Last Friday I traded a couple of amps, a PA, and one of those 16-track recording studios and put the proceeds towards my first Gibson: a Robert Johnson L-1. I played one at Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center and one at Dave Phillips Music about a year ago and I couldn't get it out of my mind. I've been primarily a Martin guy over the past 10 years but I've broadened my tastes to better fit the diverse music I like to play.

I currently own a 12-fret 000 Martin with red spruce top and Madagascar RW back and sides; a 14-fret Grand Auditorium sized Taylor (514ce) with a cedar top and hog b/s. The L-1 will fill a couple of voids: a) I'm a huge fan of Skip James and Son House but when I play them on the Martin, a bit too much bass covers the individual notes (read: I'm not disciplined enough of a player), and :D I'm on the road once every 3 weeks and I want a smaller guitar to travel with while maintaining an excellent sound.

When I played the L-1 in the stores I noticed that I just wanted to write right away! I was very impressed with its feel and its overall projection.

So, tell me some of your collective experiences you've had with the L-1 or even the RJ L-1.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum sternfan!!

Many of us appreciate the diversity of other brands as well as Gibson. Sounds like you have a nice balance of wood going there.

Photos are, of course, manditory!

Welcome sternfan,

The Gibson Montana Robert Johnson L-1 captures the haunting, timeless sound of the man whose genius has inspired generations of blues artists.

I love the sound of small body guitars. The 1937 L-00 Legend is the next one on my bucket list.

Why don't you guys tell *us* a little about the guitar. Some of us (aHEM!) have been jonesing... uh, I mean "gassing"... for one for a while now. Thus far, I've only been able to see and play one, a ’94 non-signature model, which I was frankly underwhelmed with. OTOH, I played an Arlo Guthrie model, which I had heard not very good things about, and which sounded beautiful.

Thoughts? Experiences? Comparisons with other small bodies?
