Spectboy Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 I have a "project" '66 Gibson J-45 on the way. One of the things that will have to be added is a good set of string pins. So I've been checking into them a little. After a great discussion with Gilliangirl, I found this article from a Martin association. http://www.maurysmusic.com/bridge_pins_effect_on_tone I thought it was good for making choices. I'll bet there are a few out there that ask this question as well. My late friend RT always liked his brass pins. I now have his guitar AND those pins which will stay put. And no, gilliangirl.... I'm not trying to start one of those threads, I do believe as with all other aspects of guitar sound and playing, each to his/her own... heh, heh. I just wanted to get this site out to those interested.
ajsc Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 "Ebony can add bass and warmth to your Martin, along with a signifigant increase in sustain & volume." But.........what can it do for your Gibson?
Taylor Player Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 "Ebony can add bass and warmth to your Martin' date=' along with a signifigant increase in sustain & volume." But.........what can it do for your Gibson?[/quote'] Everything it says there....... only it will sound better! :- :)
mooseguy Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Spectboy: ANY thing but brass will make your guitar sound better-get rid of them fast- Moose
DonCarlos Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Did someone bring up bridge pins? LOL. Well I think bridge pins add that personalized particular look for a guitar. I won't get into the affect on guitar tones created of the woods versus bone versus ivory versus concrete etc....; According to most, brass/metal seems to add a definite difference in sound. Here are some different metal pins that are mentioned and not often mentioned here at this forum. http://www.pinzuk.com/ http://www.tisonix.com/test/index.html -or these fancy dancy solid silver ones: http://www.gempins.com/ordering.htm Would like to see pics of your J45 when you get it in.
Gilliangirl Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 ROFL..... if yer lookin' fer trouble, da da da da da... you've come to the right place, da da da da da (anyone else remember that Elvis Presley tune?)!!! Very interesting article, Spectboy! That one's going in My Favorites folder
asmith9509 Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 I like the looks of the Bob Colosi pins that I put in my J-45. They are "vintage" bone with tortoise inlay.
DonCarlos Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 ....or these. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://farm1.static.flickr.com/118/305906309_64e8e7f8a9.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.flickr.com/photos/80651083%40N00/305906309/&usg=__pymZDxWwaI-V74U8_VlqS8iawzo=&h=331&w=500&sz=142&hl=en&start=363&um=1&tbnid=TEddkT0szv7jBM:&tbnh=86&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbridge%2Bpins%26ndsp%3D20%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26start%3D360%26um%3D1

Could you post a couple pictures of your guitar with those pins on them? That would be great to see. I wish more people would do that so we all have an idea of what a particular set looks on a particular model. Thanks. In fact, what would members thinks of running a picture thread on the mod's that people have done to their acoustic model. It may help some to "do" or "not to do" the same maodification. It is just hard to envision the particular machine head or bridge pin for example, without seeing it on the guitar itself.
