Homz Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Marvin Gaye -- "What's Going On" awesome live version. Two extremely powerful political commentaries on war. Done so creatively that you'd hardly even know. Damn does it get any smoother then Marvin. If Bob Dylan and Barry White had a child it would be Marvin Gaye. (Yeah, I know they're guys; it's an hypothetical analogy)
killyridols Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 There was a show on BBC Radio 2 recently called the record producers. They had access to the original master tapes of What's Goin On. Listening to Marvins' vocal track blew me away. For me he's the greatest singer ever. The Temptations are a favourite of mine.
L5Larry Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 From the thread title, the R&B music of Motown and Memphis (Stax/Volt Records), lives on very well here in the midwest where it was born. That 60's/early 70's music was some of the greatest pop music created anywhere, anytime. 10 -15 years ago I played in two Motown/Memphis R&B showbands at different times. They both worked 5-6 nights a week. Now the problem is I've played all those songs so many times I can't stand to even hear them on the radio anymore
Homz Posted May 25, 2009 Author Posted May 25, 2009 I guess I didn't mean that Motown was a dead music. I meant it was often overlooked here on the forum. We often talk about classic rock, but tend to over look other varieties. It deserves more attention. I realize it's a Gibson forum and much of the Motown isn't guitar dominate like say blues or rock, but I guess I was in a Marvin mood.
KSG_Standard Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Stevie Wonder Smokey Robinson and the Miracles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVbfES9DVLc The Funk Brothers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Funk_Brothers
Cruznolfart Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 The unsung, collective genii of The Funk Brothers, the foundation upon which every Motown hit was built. Just listen to anything Gordy's studio ever put out.
jannusguy Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 + 1 on the funk bros. marvin's live version of "distant lover", i have it on his greatest hits, is unreal. every time i hear that , the hair on my neck stands up. i love the crowd reaction. amazing.

80LPC Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 I never tire of those James Jamerson basslines - it's amazing to hear the bass providing both foundation and additional melody.

[/quote'] Bullsh!t Homz..... I'm gonna back you up here buddy. Motown is as big a part of Classic Rock, as Blues ever was. And Country. And, having said that, there would be NO Rock without bluegrass. It's a long road, and a small wheel, my friend. Best of luck..... Murph.
bol316 Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Easily Stevie Wonder. Man that Innervisions album is just too good to not own. The best

GuitarJunkie Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 While not my favorite Motown tunes, most people don't give enough credit to the Jackson 5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DYgf_Cl59o (Go straight to 1:20 to skip the intro) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYx3BR2aJA4 Michael used to be able to really kick it before he grew up into a middle-aged white woman. This is probably in my top three... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAUnQAjZbGM
Murph Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Yuuukkkkk.... Just sayin'..... I still like yer Z............. Yep...... I think the Groper is mad at me..... How could that be? I don't know...... Murph.
