m1julien Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 hello =) i'm about to buy my first electric guitar (i'm a college student) and i've worked very hard to have enough money to buy my electric guitar so i want to make sure i'm not making any bad choices ! i'm a left-handed and was really interested in buying this particular model : http://elderly.com/vintage/items/31U-482.htm I'd like to know please what do you think of this model, if it's a good deal etc.. thank you and i'll wait for your answers =) ! jul
stevezapp Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 She's lovely mate, I'd have her. I'm not too sure whether this is a good deal or not as it's not in the UK market, but I'm sure one of the US guys will tell you.
Corrosion of conformity Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 It's a beautiful guitar, and that's a great price on it, considering it's an older model. it's going to be hard to find a left-handed guitar that nice, so if you have the money, I say go for it!
m1julien Posted May 26, 2009 Author Posted May 26, 2009 hey guys ! you know i'd like to keep these guitars for a lots of years, probably decades so i hope i'll be happy with it ! as you can see this beauty has some dents on the neck but i guess it's not that important, afterall the guitar is 30 years old !
dmeds Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 Seems to be a fair price for that year/model. Have you played it? The best guitar for you boils down to whether it feels and sounds right to you. I've made the mistake in the past of buying a guitar without ever playing it. Sure it looked great and tone was fine but it just didn't feel right in my hands. Fortunately, a return was an option that I took advantage of with a loss in shipping. $$ I've sampled a few LP Customs and feel that their tone is brighter and bit sterile compared to the woody growl of a Standard. Something to think about. Personally, I have a problem with finishes that are that worn down to the bare wood. YMMV
m1julien Posted May 26, 2009 Author Posted May 26, 2009 hey ! i won't actually be able to play this instrument as i live in europe and the gibson is in the United States ! but i'll try a les paul custom at the end of the week because i found a store that has one ! but thanks dmed for your advices, i'll keep that in mind
jnastynebr Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 That's quite a chunk of change for a first guitar. I think I dropped a bill fifty on my first git (SG copy from a pawn shop). But hey, if you got the $, go for it!
NeoConMan Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 My dealer has two of the last Lefty Les Pauls made. Both are 58 Reissues and in pristine condition. When Gibson told him they were gonna stop making Lefties, he bought all they had left - 6 or 8 pieces I think. Asking $3,500 apiece, I don't know how firm the price is. They listed for $6,000 if I recall. I don't think he's very excited about shipping overseas. Pics; I can get you more info if you're interested.
BigKahune Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 ... as you can see this beauty has some dents on the neck but i guess it's not that important' date=' afterall the guitar is 30 years old ![/quote'] That looks like play wear to me. Seems to be in great condition considering it's age and the play it's had (judging by the neck wear). I don't see any bad buckle rash either. Pretty good price. You might want to email/call them for a hands on description. I've bought 3 guitars out of that store, in person. Nice crew. Good luck.
m1julien Posted May 26, 2009 Author Posted May 26, 2009 jnastynebr => i know but i've been working very hard to get the money so now i just want to spend it :- NeoConMan => hey ! i love the second les paul ! is it a Les Paul Custom ? Or Les Paul Standard ? They look really awesome but I won't be able to go up to 3500$ 3000$ is the maximum for me....=(
NeoConMan Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 Both are 58 Reissues and in pristine condition. These are still factory new guitars - warranty and the whole bit.
Tim Plains Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 m1julien, you can find those used on eBay for $1,800 - $2,500 US. New or used, they're worth every penny. Great guitars.
pippy Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Good guitar. Have you checked out how much, if anything, will be added in the way of import duties to the total price when it comes over the border? In the UK, for example, import duty and VAT mean approx 20% of the purchase price is payable on top. In the case of "your" guitar this would be an extra $550.00. It would be advisable to clarify your country's rules to avoid a possible surprise. Best of luck!
m1julien Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 pippy => i hadn't actually thought of that but thank you for telling me =) ! are nine => yeah maybe but i'm a left handed player so on ebay left handed les pauls start a 2500-3000$ minimum
m1julien Posted May 30, 2009 Author Posted May 30, 2009 hey again ! i still haven't bought the guitar but i think i'm about to. it's just that i've heard really bad things with 1979 Gibson Les Paul. They're supposed to be really really heavy and the quality was really bad compared to a 1971, 1974 or even a 1978 ! so i don't really know what to do actually
Bram Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 I think it's a great deal for a '79. Norlin Les Pauls are heavy.

[/quote']Any bad things said about a '79 also apply to those other years you mentioned. That's the Norlin era.
m1julien Posted May 30, 2009 Author Posted May 30, 2009 how about the neck ? is the '79 neck hard to play or rather easy ? cuz i've never had a gibson before and i've been told that gibson necks were sometimes hard to play
HiLifeRocker Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 In spite of the neck wear (which you are the only one to see it while playing live!) - its in great shape for a late '70s LP. Unless its been done already - prepare yourself for taking on expense of a refret - its the first thing I'd have to do if I bought any of the '70s (heavily played) LP Customs I've looked at/played. Good luck !!
