joeypinter Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 hey, i have a '93 special. how can i tell if there are P-90's or P-100's by LOOKING at them???file:///C:/Users/joe/Documents/Downloads/3e82_3.JPG
NeoConMan Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 No way to tell that I know of... Call Gibson Customer Service. Open 24/7 and they can tell you what it shipped with originally. I've played P-100's a couple times, seemed hotter to me than the P-90's - aside from sounding different. If you are considering a swap, I wouldn't pay money for a P-100. P-90's are cool as hell, and there are many variations of them out there. One can sound much different from another, depending on year and origin of manufacture.
joeypinter Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 thanks, i just talked to gibson and they are P-100's
NeoConMan Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 I figured as much - to combat the hum. Do you like 'em okay? Thinking about a swap?
joeypinter Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 i am thinking about swapping them for P-90's, any suggestions.
NeoConMan Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Aw, Jeez.... Now you're where I was several years ago. Hard to play and compare P-90's because so few stores stock any. Also, you'll find an SG Junior with one P-90 and an old hollow body with another - no way to actually compare them. I have Seymour Duncan P-90's in a Guild BluesBird (think chambered Les Paul) and they are HOT. The P-90's in the 2006 SG Classic I had were just about right, the volume knob made a huge difference. Wide open, it would sizzle like any humbucker. Dial it back it cleans up, down to 3 or so it sounds sweet as can be. I have a home built Strat with Fender Dove P-90's and they seem to be a little lower in output. Difference in guitars maybe? I dunno. The sound is badass, that guitar has SERIOUS Mojo and is very controllable from mild to wild. After all I've learned, I recommend you call Lindy Fralin - the guy answers his own phone! I had some work done by him, he's a class act and will not bullsh!t you. Discuss with him what you're thinking and he can fix you up. The price may surprise you.... One last thing, remember ALL aftermarket joints like Duncan, DiMarzio and such make HOT pickups. What they consider "vintage" is still pretty hot, and what they call "hot" will be smokin' hot high output. Don't overdo it.
pohatu771 Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 My Spirit/Special has what I was told are "Duncan Hot P-90s," but I can't say for sure that they are. They aren't available at the moment (sitting on the workbench), but I'll check the sticker when I get a chance. They sound quite nice, though.
