So I finally joined the Fender forum.

I never really had the urge to go over there, despite owning several Fenders.

There's just not that much to talk about with Fenders.

Then the format sucks, a narrow half-screen thing with tiny font size - and I have excellent vision!

After a few days, noticing a few familiar names, I can't even find anything I want to post in.

Anyhow, I was talking to my dealer about something similar to this awhile back.

I have three Strats, with single coils, P-90's and Tele Deluxe humbuckers. Not much else I need.

I have a killer Ash Tele, and would only buy more to get a Deluxe with a bound body - cosmetics in other words.

Maybe a hot humbucker Tele for some rock n roll....

P-Bass?

Yeah, but I don't need it. I already have a vintage Peavey bass that's in pristine condition - and I don't play it.

Anyhow, Fender really doesn't have anything else I want.

Gibson, on the other hand.....

There's probably three dozen Gibsons I would still like to buy in addition to the dozen or more I've owned already.

More than a dozen variations on the Les Paul alone!

A couple more SG's, several Designer bodies like the V, Explorer and such.

Then there's all the different hollow bodies....

There's so much to see, so much to know, so much to yearn for!

Hell, I never go to the PRS forum either, cuz there's only a handful of them I want in addition to what I own now.

And they're all $$$$$$....

Gibson, this is where it's at!

:-)

What type is it?

Production started in 1978, these are from 1979 & 1980

Matching cases anyway....

Never saw a built in amp with one of these.

Did Peavey do that?

Danelectro and a few others did, those are kinda rare now.

Can't Find any of my Photo's, but right now their is a nice T-15 with a Original Case with the Factory 50 Watt Amp inside.

The Darn thing only has a 53 dollar Bid on it with 2 days left.

Some Market value, Ha.

Man those are nice.

That pretty much sums it up perfectly, Neo!

Like you I like certain Fenders and had quite a few including a very rare 1967 Swinger, a bound Tele Deluxe and my beloved '64 Strat.

But; once you've exhausted the pre- post CBS discussion there's not a lot to say. In my view (and I realise others will disagree strongly) Fenders in general don't have as engaging a character as Gibsons.

I know the vintage stuff has great history and the amps are on a par with the best but nothing is as interesting as, say, the LP, Explorer, V. Even Gibson pickups are more interesting than their Fender counterparts.

Whilst I wouldn't go so far as to say 'A Strat is a Strat is a Strat...' (I kept 3 as they were very diferent in their own way) it's not far off.

I don't really think of Fenders anymore but I dream of Gibsons....

EDIT: I've just found a snap from 1981. Excuse the bed linen, please!

The pale blue 'Strat' is actually an early Tokai.

The black one is the 'Swinger', and the Gold-Top is my very first guitar - a 1975 'Grant' LP copy with a pair of DiMarzio Dual-Sounds.

Those Peavey's are a blast from the past! Back in high school my best guitar buddy had a T-60 which I remember as being super solid and well-built. That was around 1979-1980, and the no.1 guitarist in our school had an old Strat with its finish stripped off to reveal...a 1-piece ash body. I'd love to see that guitar again, now, as I kinda remember it having a one-piece skunk-stripe maple neck, small headstock, and an 8-screw pickguard, and back in 1980, relic'd 50's re-issues didn't exist, yet (or did they?).

Of course, a Peavey (and my '64 Harmony) couldn't stand up to an axe like that, not to mention that the guy who had it could really play...

Pete, the T-60 owner moved on to a 69 Les Paul Custom (one piece body, 3 piece neck), and later a very early PRS, then became a pro studio guitarist and producer and has owned 100's of guitars of all kinds. I think the T-60 was his first electric.

Neo, I agree with you on your Fender forum point. There's something "rational" about the whole Fender line up, which when you get down to it, really consists of two truly great guitars, two really great basses, and the rest are secondary models that look neat but are essentially variations of the original idea and aren't all that popular (Jag, Jazzmaster, Mustang, Music-Master, Tele-bass) or are downright foot-notes in guitar history (Coronado, Bass-6).

I guess with Rick's, the choice is even smaller...

Besides Gibson/Epiphone, what historic electric guitar-maker has ever made so many desirable and varied models? Guild? Gretsch? Probably 3-4 of each that I could get interested in. With Gibson, the list is huge, and I'm always learning new things about models I thought I already knew alot about.

Another thing about Gibsons is the variety of interesting pickups...Charlie Christians, Alnico V, P-90, Epi New York mini-hums, Firebird mini-hums, PAFs and their progeny, MM single coils, and that's just into the 60's! By that time, how many pick-up varieties did Fender have? Of course, a Fender afficionado would say they got it right first time out so they didn't have to fiddle around...

Strangely enough in 1967 Seth Lover (who designed the PAF) moved from Kalamazoo to California where he went to work for Fender as a designer of their new amplifiers and pickups...

Most cool indeed, Roger!

Hope you hit the right combination and some good comes of it!

I've looked at the Tele Thinline with some fondness.

I installed the Tele Deluxe humbuckers in a Strat even...

The new Thinlines are not American made (I'm a snob!) and the originals are now sky-high in price.

Shameful, just a few short years ago my dealer had them and Deluxes stacked up like cordwood - couldn't give 'em away.

Now they're $2,000 for a nice one.

Go figure!

Was the original body actually made of Rosewood?

All the ones made in recent history are simply dark stains on Alder.

Yes; they were solid rosewood.

I quote; "In 1972 the Telecaster was offered with a solid rosewood body. Not many of these very attractive models were made as rosewood became prohibitive in price. They are highly desired by collectors today and usually feature beautiful graining. They were, by the nature of this timber, a very heavy guitar."

That was written in 1978, before the 'Vintage' market took off. If they were highly desired back in those days goodness knows how much more desired they will be nowadays!

Neo I frequent there too.

There is plenty to talk about like: If you use rusted screws for the trem your guitar will sound better, or 2006 MIMs will be collectables. Or you can start the 300th thread on the Fender price increase.

Actually, they are fine over there. Most members are very knowledgeable, though there are a few that offer up opinion as fact, but I guess that is true everywhere. In general, they own and respect Gibbys.

believe it or not i actually like the fender forums...

the fender forums have a huuuuuge knowledge base...

and there are a couple of members...(one apparently is john mayer) who have the biggest collections of strats...and rare ones at that (aka jimmie's montery strat) by the dozens and dozens...

alaindefrance i think is one of the members who has at least 100 hard to find strats!

on top of that the amp section is killer...because fender does make so many awesome amps...

that being said...the black background with the white text really strains my eyes...and the constant emails i got anytime anyone posted on something i did was a bit overwhelming...

i havent been on that forum in months because i have my '62 AVRI Strat and have no plans to get another Fender any time soon...

but i will say that i learned a lot off of that forum...they have very good discussions on there about aging nitro in a mason jar in the sun before applying it...very cool...

and on different wiring schematics!

thats another point that fender does quite well...they link up sites with original wiring schematics for the do-it-yourselfer!

regardless...the constant updating on this particular site as well as all of the GOOFY characters makes this the reason i keep coming back so many times in a single day!

The only thing left from Fender that I'm gassin for is a 68 rosewood tele reissue like George Harrison's. Beautiful.

they were on sale via the custom shop for like $4 grand a year or so ago...i wanted one soo bad as well...

in fact wildwood guitars had a couple but they are sold out long ago...

there was a piece of maple sandwiched in between the rosewood if i remember correctly?

gorgeous!

and i think you can still order via custom shop but youre looking at a six month wait at least and about a 6 grand price tag!

Which this Forum will never have - because Gibson automatically deletes all posts older than 6 months here.

Its intended to Keep you talking about new models, and forget about the old models.
