New Traditional - Fret Question

Hello!

I have recently purchased a Traditional, and although I love the guitar obsessively, I have noticed something that concerns me a little.

When bending the strings, particularly higher up the the board, I have notice the strings "scraping" away at the frets. It does this for a couple of bends, then it is fine.

I have experienced this on other new guitars, but never on a Gibson. Is the the early signs of fret wear already?? I have heard talk of oxidization on frets too.

Thanks

Ant

While it's hard to tell on your words alone, it could be any of many things.

Dirts on the frets.

Worn out strings.

Someone has done work on the frets and then not polished them properly. So the scraping is the strings going across the file marks left in the frets. Something I've seen far too often, both from factory in a number of brands and "respected luthiers" alike.

It is hard to to tell from what you wrote. I know it's new but the guitar may need a fret dress. Speak with any luthier or tech who knows his stuff and you'll probably hear that frets on Gibson USA guitars aren't the greatest. Gibson tries spending as little time as possible on them.

I had a similar symptom on my plus strat. The guy I bought it from (a musician) has had it stored and untouched for ~17 years, so when I tested it, it scraped a lot at the frets. This was though due to plain dirt, so the problem was easily solved by bending each string a little, all over the neck.

Oh brother not the strings will ruin your frets theory again. It's just not going to happen. =D>

Like AXE said they're new could be some film on them it will be fine.

Thats good to know "again" because I use Ernie Ball 10's. Haven't noticed any fret wear.

Unless you play 10 hours a day and play hard. Lots of bending and vibrato for a year straight you may need a crowning.

Well no worries then, I'm Lucky if I get 10 hours a week, you know, wife, kids, work etc., etc...

Thanks for the replies. The frets "look" fine and would you believe it, I have noticed any of the scraping since I started this topic! Im hoping it was just the newness wearing off like you say.
