Tim Plains Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Anybody here ever refret a Gibson or know anybody who has and paid to have new nibs put back over the frets? I had some upgrades done to my R8 () and had a chat with the luthier. He said that in all the number of years he's been guitar building/repairing, he's never had a customer ask him to re-cover the edges of the frets on a Gibson. He said he'd gladly do it but that it would be expensive. OK...now thinking about that, I didn't ask how much extra that would cost but wouldn't you want those nibs back on after a refret? A refet on this gent's website is $375 (Canadian). Even if it was an extra $100, wouldn't you do it? The way I see it, they complete the guitar. Not a big deal if you have (say) a LP Studio or SG Special that had no nibs in the first place but on something like a Standard or a reissue I'd think it would be odd not having them, don't you?
AXE® Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 I'll call SABLE. My guy here will do the whole shebang for $450. USD. And yes nibs are required.
Murph Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 When I moved up here from Lousiana in 94, my '72 Recording Les Paul was overdue for a fret job. I didn't know anybody, was kind of strapped for cash, re-locating, ect, and swapped it off. I needed a gig worthy guitar quickly, ya know. Dumbest thing I ever did. Living less than 3 hours from Gruhns. I don't know that I would care about the nibs, Tim. I'm a bar gigger, and I sweat on em', and wear em' down. I'd say not. I wouldn't care. But, you own way better guitars than I do, and keep them looking good, so in your case it makes perfect sence. Great topic.
max2343 Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 I'd want-em there. That's What Makes a Gibson. Isn't it the Neck Binding that Goes over the Frets? Dosen't Gibson Install the Fret's then install the Neck Binding. I don't think they Have separate nibs for the Frets. I would think he Should Slip the Frets in and out of the Binding that is there without Damaging it, otherwise he is just taking the easy way out and Damaging the Guitar.
GuitarJunkie Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 I'm sorry but... what's a nib? I tried to find a bigger shot' date=' but this is all I could come up with... [img']http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg251/2manyGuitars/misc/nibs.jpg[/img]
rocketman Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 I'd do it in a heartbeat. A Les Paul without the nibs is like AXE® without mojo...
Murph Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Man, Junkie..... You're good. Just don't get the............... BIG HEAD......................... Bwahahahahahahaha. Murph.
GuitarJunkie Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Just don't get the............... BIG HEAD......................... Bwahahahahahahaha. Don't talk about the SUPREME LEADER like that. He'll pop your head like a grape from halfway across the continent... And AXE, you misspelled "nibbles".
AXE® Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 I have been thinking about refreting one of mine with jumbo's and bringing the frets all the way to the edge of the board.
