Towzend Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 Strings! Strings! Strings!!... Wots best? Wot lasts? wots the best sound? wots available? This is doing my head in.. Ive mainly used D'Addarios P/Bronze EJ16-3D (12-53) & when there first put on, after a couple of days they sound fantastic on my J-200, but i find that after a couple of weeks the bass strings start to go "dull" E followed by the A string a little while later. in fact i put on a new set of 12s and within a week the low E was Dull? i fished out the old one out of the set i'd just took off and it was better? the rest of the strings are fine, its just the low E&A? I dont like the "coated" strings,i find they dont ring as much! Ive tried Elexirs and have the same problem, only a lot longer i might add, but i like the sound of the D'Addarios the best, wot can i do?? apart from buying a ton of bass strings!! Wots your veiws on the next best string to D'Addarios?
Jerry K Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 If you wait a while, you will find every type, gauge, and brand recommended! What kind of music do you play (and how - flatpick, bare fingers, fingerpicks, etc), and how do you want it to sound?
Taylor Player Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 Which Elixir's did you try? I have tried almost every string brand over the years and keep coming back to Elixir. My personal favorite on all three of my guitars is the Nano Phospher Bronze because they are a bit "darker" than the Nano 80/20's. If your looking for brighter sounding, and haven't tried the Nano 80/20's, that might be a good start for you to try. They do last a very long time and hold the brightness and whomp on the bass strings as long and longer than any other string I have tried.

nodehopper Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 Sounds like you pefer the new string brightness. I have recently been doing the string experimenting also and found that I do not care too much for the Elixer strings as I feel the plastic coating tends to be too thick and starts "Shedding" like a snake after only a couple weeks. The ones I have tried and I think keep that new string brightness the longest are a new string recently put out by Martin. Nice and bright, they are a bit slick ....but it doesn't seem to be a plastic coating like the Elixers.
TWilson Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 You sound like a candidate for D'Addario EJ-19's. EAD=mediums, GBE=lights.
sternfan Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 Please, if you ever want to try just one string that will change the way you think about the way your guitar sounds, try Newtone strings. As soon as I got my new RJ l-1 I restrung it with a set of Newtone Masterclass strings and INSTANTLY the sound was better. In addition, since they're wound on a round core they're very easy on the finger and bend very well. Whatever you try, good luck...
Flinx Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 I like D'Addario EXP strings, with the coating around the core instead of the wrap. EXP12 bronze 80/20 (mediums) and EXP19 phosphor bronze (light treble/medium wrap). EJ's may have more ring at first, but the EXP strings are very close in tone, last much longer, and don't "shed". The phosphor bronze don't seem as as bright as the 80/20s, to me. So I put the brighter strings on my warmer sounding guitars, and the warmer strings on my brighter sounding guitars. Seems to work out pretty good. If I wanna record, I use EJs. I picked up a few packs at Strings and Beyond last week, 'cause they're having a buy one get one free sale. See ya! Flinx
nodehopper Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 I tried the D'Addario EXP strings. They use slightly smaller bass strings 012, .016, .024, .032, .042, .053 and I felt I loss some bass response. The Martin SP + Extended life are very similar to the D'Addario EXP but use a standard .054 E string. My 2 Cents
DonCarlos Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Still testing on Dean Markley Alchemy Gold Bronze, Lights 11-52, and they are still sounding very nice. One thing I had done when I switched to this very light string was to have a luthier reset the neck. I had been using Cleartone PhosBronz (which is respected string, but what a positive difference when I tried these Alchemy strings). But like I said, I am still testing. So if they hold up soundwise for a couple months or more then I will stick with this brand and this very light gauge. But, there are some days when the guitar sounds brighter or darker, but I attribute that to me. Or am I alone in that explanation? I just think that there are days when you just are not hearing as clearly because of human reasons (mood, or the way you are holding the guitar that day, or the way you are playing that day, or how you are listening that day).
Towzend Posted May 31, 2009 Author Posted May 31, 2009 Ive just put on another new set of D'Addarios EJ16 (i buy in sets of 3) jus see how long these last, but some interesting comments from you guys, i will have to try some of your suggestions and let you know my results..
