Hi Guys,

can someone give an advice how to get the Jimi Hendrix Sound on my SG.

Want to play Voodoo Child.

PS:

Would also appreciate If someone could give me some tabs for this song. O:)

All I got is not really perfect.

well id say

- turn both of your tone knobs down all the way

- rock the middle position (both neck and bridge)

these will give you a thick bassy sound, sometimes you loose some high end though

- if you have a wah pedal, you can put it about 1/3 from the bass or bottom side and just leave it, thats optional

- turn your wall of marshall stacks to 10

- play from the heart

thats all i got

With a Strat + wah + marshall you'd be in the right area ! The SG sound is fundamentally different - much fatter (some would say muffled compared to a Strat). Years ago, I fitted a strat pickup into the neck cavity of my SG, but the only way to do it was by angling the PU, so I wasn't happy with the result. I decided to add coil taps, and this made the sound brighter, and more Strat-like. The mod that sounded most like a Strat was neck PU wired in parallel - I used to switch between series / parallel to get a wide range of sounds. My switches were mounted on a plate at the back of the guitar - there were no holes drilled into the body.

Having said that, with a vintage guitar, I wouldn't do these PU modifications. You could try to reshape the tone with a graphic EQ pedal by cutting the lows and boosting the highs. Frank Marino used to get some great Hendrix - style tones with his SG in the '70s. His use of the wah to great effect can be heard on 'Loved By You' from Mahogany Rush's album 'What's Next', a masterclass of SG rock shredding and blues.

Depends on which Hendrix sound you're after. There's no way an SG is going to sound like a Strat, but a wah pedal and a good fuzz into an overdriven Marshall or Fender tube amp, or a good simulation on one of the better modeling amps, might get you closer. The sounds that Hendrix actually got out of an SG were a little different--there's a clip on YouTube of Jimi playing "Red House" on a white SG Custom, and you can really hear the difference when he switches from the middle switch position (middle and bridge pickups out-of-phase) to the neck pickup.

i think that is standard wiring in a 3 pickup gibson? i know on my variax there is a setting that is reguarded as pretty unique.

"Based on 1961 Gibson® Les Paul® Custom

In addition to its sophisticated ornamentation, this

particular incarnation of the Les Paul® Custom offers

three P.A.F.’s. We’ve modeled the combination of

bridge and middle pickups that sets this model apart."

i'm curious on that does the "1961" give us the idea he is meaning the sg?

Yes, the '61 Les Paul Custom was the SG. Les Paul objected to his name being used, so Gibson removed it.

Is the Variax sound a good SG emulation ?

Have you tried dropping acid?

just say no, especially when someone wants the washing up done!

i think it's an ok emulation on the variax. the overtones i hear on my real guitars are not there for the gibsons? it's good and thick distorted but with no gain it's not what i wanted for gibbo's the strat and tele are agreed by all as good. the acoustics are good. banjo, mandolin, sitar, firebird, p90 les pauls cool. actually the only ones lacking are the gibson les pauls or maybe it's my ears. the variax 2 will be out next year so lets see what happens with that. workbench adds some fun by putting the pickups on different guitars.
