hi all

I just noticed my 2004 WM45 has something weird happening to the headstock , has anyone seen this ?

I've changed the stock gold tuners to the white button, and got rid of the black pickguard, for a more traditional looking pickguard, and I think it is looking mighty fine=p~

oh....and the guitar is the standard full gloss finish, not the satin....

Yes, I've seen it on Gibsons before--usually on the backstrip, mid-nineties models. It is a clouding under the clearcoat; I don't know what causes it. In one instance I had a J-30 and the finish blistered. I have some Hamers that exhibit a similar finish flaw at the heel and the headstock face. It's common enough at Hamer to be called Hameritis.

I've seen this too on a early/mid 90's Jubilee J-30. It was located above the soundhole as long curved pick-scars, but like under-surface blisters.

Mojo ? - Maybe, but not the right kind. . . .

I've seen that on Gibson instruments over the years.......finish cracking along the headstock "wing" joints. To my thinking, it's caused by the wing joint moving a bit....not opening up, just moving. The grain at these lamination points runs opposite one another and fluctuations in temp and humidity cause the two pieces to move slighty, opening up a cosmetic finish crack. I did see the photo goneaway posted of his reported headstock crack (before he took it down) and I don't think it was a crack at all. In one of the photos of the headstock front you could see the line of light glare across the top edge of the headstock......the line of glare was unbroken. If it was a crack the glare would have exposed it. Not the case......it was a perfect white glare line across the top of the headstock. No crack.
