chatterbox Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 wich model is the best between the les paul special 1960 historic reissue or the VOS one (or maybe are they the same guitar instead of the finishes)?
Tim Plains Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Same guitar. The one that's referred to as "reissue" has a glossy finish. Meaning the guitar looks brand new. The one that's referred to as "VOS" has an aged look to it. The VOS is $300 cheaper. You really can't do much about the aged hardware but you can buy a product called Virtuoso Cleaner & Polish and give the wood a nice shine.
deepblue Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 The word "Best" always confuses me.....best in what way?
chatterbox Posted June 1, 2009 Author Posted June 1, 2009 The VOS one is 300$ cheaper and I don't think the hi-gloss finish cost more than the nitrocellulose finish. So, maybe there's something different in the construction of the guitar. I heard that the historic reussie, the one with the glossy finish, has a thinner neck. I also know that the VOS model wraparound bridge is made of aluminium. I just want to know if the playability, the quality, the comfort or just the feel is superior for 300$ more. That's what I meant by using the word best. I like the fact that the VOS includes all the original specs like the fat neck with the 50s profile but if it's more a piece of collection than a everyday playing instrument, maybe the hi-gloss model is superior in that kind of way. But I don't know, I haven't play with both, that's why I want to know other point of view.

So' date=' maybe there's something different in the construction of the guitar.[/quote']The gloss finish is buffed, the VOS finish isn't. They're both nitro. Right up until the buffing station, both guitars are identical. At least, that's what I've been told.
Pink_Floyd Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 The whole Vintage Original Spec (VOS) thing really throws some people. I have heard all sorts of misconceptions about what this process is and what it is not. I will make it simple the R0 or 1960 reissue VOS is the SAME guitar as the 1960 R0 Gloss. The ONLY difference is the actual finishing process and the aged hardware, i.e cosmetics. The neck is the same, as are the electronics and any difference in 'quality' is really down to end user perception and what you prefer.

Hence, the $300 difference to account for the extra process in labor. That's probably why many will tell you that you can easily buff a VOS Gibby into a gloss version with the right tools.
Tim Plains Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 chatterbox, they're exactly the same guitar except one looks brand new and one does not. One doesn't have a slimmer neck than the other.
chatterbox Posted June 2, 2009 Author Posted June 2, 2009 ok, so I think I'll go with the VOS, Very easier to find and if I want a glossy finish I can make it shine myself. Thanks
Luap Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Can you also make the aged hardware on a VOS guitar shine again?
dmeds Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 You can make it shine again although the final appearance would still show signs of aging. It seems that whatever process they apply etches into the hardware creating that worn scratched finish. So in the end you’ll have shiny road worn hardware. Play On!
