Geff Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Has anyone any information on this. I noticed that MF have cut prices on fenders. Is this a Fender initiative or is it MF trying to get rid of stock? I would assume it is the start of retaliation to Gibson's price cuts.
The Fool on The Hill Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 I lost respect for Fender when they raised the Prices on their Guitars right when my Dealer had them in stock, I decided to go with Gibson ever since better quality anyways and for the price of a Fender i could get a Firebird or a Les Paul classic.
Tim Plains Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 ^ You mean your dealer raised the prices on the stock they already had in the store? That's not Fender's doing, that's your music store ripping off it's customers. The same thing happened up here, not just Fender but also Gibson. A $3,100 Gibson R8 jumped up to $4,000...but music stores would honor old prices on gear they had in stock before the price hike. So, one R8 was $3,100 and the one right beside it was $4,000...exact same guitar. Gibson better quality than Fender? I don't think so. My $1,000 Strat doesn't feel cheap, a $2,000 Gibson LP feels cheap.
gnolivos Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 It must be a Fender incentive, because Sweetwater is also showing the price drops on many Fender models today....
Geff Posted June 2, 2009 Author Posted June 2, 2009 Im not fender bashing except over pricing. Ok so they are bolt on necks but the quality for the money is in many cases notably better than Gibson. I bought my son a fender squire strat and the neck was very smooth and well finished at a price way below even an Epi. Ok the pickups were very basic but all in all very good value and no quality issues at all. I dont want a fender because of several factors. I like the humbucker sound and I love the look of the SG and I just think fenders are too generic and "pop-y". If I ever got a fender it would probably be a telecaster. Lets be honest with ourselves, there is no "perfect" guitar. If there was we would all only ever own, or apsire to own, one guitar. Gibson have their own issues. The important thing is to be happy with what you have and I am sure there are people on here who own collections that include Gibson, Fender and various other brands. My intent was just to point out that we appear to be at the start of a price war!

Geff Posted June 3, 2009 Author Posted June 3, 2009 Except my new classic with p90s which was just the right price (I got a really good deal but now i have it, I would actually be prepared to pay the usual price for it).

Basically what i am saying is no one should be spending so much money on Reissues when Gibson should be making their Guitars that way in the first place. The same goes with Fender.
eldiablo Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Fender raised prices by about 25%-30% across the board in early March/April. If you frequent any of the Fender boards the climate was very negative towards Fender making these increases, especially in this economy. The very same guitar that sold for $1500 was $1850 over night. Needles to say I'm sure many potential buyers were put off by this. Myself included. Gibson appears to have really gone after Fenders bad judgment. They recently lowered prices on a several SG and Studio models, The release a new RAW power line is clearly targeting Strat's and Tele's, You can buy a LP Traditional Pro for under 2 grand. Gibson must be kicking Fenders A55 I'd love to see the recent sales figures Vs. Fender for last and next quarter. Unless you really want a Fender no matter what, Gibson may be taking the undecided consumer. Too bad Fender hasn’t lowered prices on many of the MIA guitars... my guess is more price cuts on the way.

It seems that Gibson is using a strategy that benefits them and the customer instead of it just benefiting them for a change. P.S At the Fender forums there have already been a couple of Converts to the SG.
L5Larry Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 OK, I might be an old fart, but I bought my first Fender for $195. It just happened to be a 1960 Strat. I bought my first Gibson from Mel Bay himself, it was a brand new 1975 Les Paul Standard..........$500. There's a huge economic problem in the USA a the moment, we'll see who is still standing when it is all over.

Just invested in my new SG Standard because I saw the price cut. I compared it to what Fender had available for the price and went with the Gibby
drumrnmuzik Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 I firmly believe that a guitar fits your body in a personal way. Even if the Strat is smoothed out to hug you rib cage and feels comfortable, when I put a strap on it, it's off set to the right making it harder to access the higher pitched 6th string. Like I said else where here, I wish that I could have gotten an SG Raw Power and maybe put on some Fender sounding pups. I agree 100%, that the Raw Powers are a Gibson assault on the Fender sound lovers.
yucancallmepatty Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 so you fender players know, the company raises their prices by 10% every 'end-of' February. so buying one, before the end of February is best. as for the price drop on the websites, i believe its musicians friend trying to rid of their stock and naturally, other websites like music 123 will match their competitors low prices, in order to stay in competition. fender wants to be liked, so i personally think they would announce any special price drops. price drops gets their name out, and sells more products

I compared it to what Fender had available for the price and went with the Gibby Same here... I was looking to add a MIA Tele or Strat to my collection but got a sour taste in my mouth for Fender with the increased prices... right when I had the $ to buy a new guitar... Right when Gibson dropped the prices... Now I have an SG and not a Tele... I'm very happy with the SG too!!! Yes Gibson pricing is insane for the most part. That's why I always liked Fenders... an Iconic brand with fair prices for MIA guitars. Now MIA pricing is in Gibson territory, so might as well get the Gibson in that case. Eventually I will add a MIA Fender guitar(s) to my collection but not at the ridiculas prices they are asking now. Either I'll wait around for the perfect sale/deal, buy used, or... add some more cash and get an R8. I think the R8 is gonna win that one. Fender lower your prices on the MIA Guitars.... I'll consider one if you do.
