Great price on vintage SG

A buddy of mine has an SG that I've always loved. It is a '67 SG Special, totally stock,in real nice shape w/case. The color has faded from cherry to a nice orange/brown. Only the case and the stopbar aren't original-easy enough to replace. He has fallen on hard times & is willing to let me have it for a GRAND. I told him I thought it was worth more, but he said I could have it with the condition that I would sell it back to him for the same price if he ever wanted it back, and I was OK with that, since he would prolly sell it to a pawn shop if I didn't buy it. So whaddaya all think--worth a grand? BTW it has bevels the Bomb would be happy with, and it will make a perfect addition to my heavily beveled '61 (I'm a bevel freak, too)

Sounds more like you are the pawn shop.

But if you are cool knowing the guitar might go bye bye anytime in the future then that is all that matters.

I would be prepared to lose the guitar one day.

Personally unless this is really a loan with the guitar as collateral(which is what it sounds like) I'd tell him you want the guitar free and clear.

But I can understand if your good friends you would want to help your bro out.

Nothing wrong with that.

Well, I wouldn't HAVE to sell it back to him, just that he wants first dibs if I ever decide to sell it, but if he could ever raise the grand again,I'd give it to him--he's a good friend, and I did the same thing with him when I bought his Vox amp a couple years ago--bought it back a couple months later. But he doesn't play anymore,so I'm sure the guitar would be mine. I don't really need it, but I'd hate to see it go to a pawn shop.

Too many strings. Its nice to help a friend out but it may come back to bite you if you are not careful. Say one day you get tired of it and want to get rid of it and he says he doesn't want it, are you suppose to keep it or sell it. Maybe you need a contract incase.

P.S. I watch court TV so I may be a little paranoid.

P.S. I watch court TV so I may be a little paranoid.[/quote'] No, the deal is I can do what I want with it, just that if he wants it back & has the money he's got first dibs. He specifically said "would you sell it back to me" Not "you hafta sell it back to me. He's one of my best friends, so no problemo there. But he doesn't play anymore, so he's not gonna want to part with a grand in THIS economy to buy something he ain't gonna use. But if he does, I won't mind selling it back, cause I have a '61 RI to play. This is gonna be an "in the case" guitar. Will post pics as soon as I get it (this weekend) and my girlfriend teaches me how to use a digital camera!

Dickey, how about looking at it this way;

If you don't get it, and it goes to a pawn shop, and some dumb *** gets it just to hack it up for some crazy whim.... think of that poor '67 being tortured and mutilated...

Just make my eyes well up thinkin' about it..... and it was your buddy's guitar.... oh the misery........................

Dickey,

Sorry about the last reply, it's my cartoon brain getting loose again.

I believe your intentions are honest 'cause you're helping a buddy and finding a great guitar at the same time an all of that is surley cool.

Hope that you post those pic.

Well,my conscience got to me--I told my friend that while I was willing to give him a grand for the SG, I thought it was worth more & talked him out of selling it so cheap. So we put it in Craigslist for twice that price. While I miss getting a great SG at a ridiculously low price,at the same time I couldn't rip him off like that. I would never enjoy playing the guitar if I didn't tell him that, and if it doesn't sell, the grand will always be there waiting for him!

Do you have the link for said Craigslist post?
I'm not sure how to send a link, but look under "Tampa Bay Craigslist" I posted the ad for him yesterday under "musical instruments"
