Are you saying they're having a hard time setting a standard for the standard?

yes... you picked up on that

I was mainly talking about the last 10 yrs or so; I remember multiple changes within them to the Standard.

Actually one of the reasons I posed the question was because I was thinking about getting one and when I began to think about which to go for (in general) I realized that there are so many choices depending on the year it was made.

Thinking about unloaded my LE Explorer and the LP VM w/P94s....

Friend, go with the "new" standard, it is the pinacle of guitar developement. Gibson put a lot of time and, may I say love (for guitars or for money, it's the same to me), into the new standard and they do know their stuff, after all they are the best of the best.

Actually TFITH I can see where Giant is going with that comment... I kind of agree. If someone is looking for a "historically correct standard" then good luck, you either buy a real original 59 or you have one made by a luthier, either way it will cost a lot.

If you want a great guitar to play her and use it as a guitar, not a trophy, then the new standard is as great as you can get.

Apples Oranges

Pickles and Peppers.

I like apples AND oranges AND pickles AND peppers... is that wrong? I mean... everybody seems to think you can like only one of those things... =D>

I have a 2008 Standard Plus and could not be happier. The thing to do is go to a store that has new and used ones and find what you like best. Only you can make that call. I for one am really glad they make more then one les paul. Many people seem to think that there should only be one model, theirs, and the rest of us need to just pull our heads out be just like them. I mean after all think how great the musical world would be with only '59 les pauls. Man that would be the best!!!! Not angry or trying to be a d**k, just the attitude that there is only 1 good les paul just gets old.

Yep... that would be great, only the 59 les paul and all of us battling over the 600some of them.

When shopping for a new LP not so long ago, I chatted awhile with the owner of a long time established Gibson dealer. I told him that I once owned a ’76 Black Beauty and wanted something similar. “Ah,” he said “then you’ll want a LP Standard.” He showed me his nice inventory of LP’s.

For some reason I couldn’t put down this particular Traditional. “That’s one heck of a Standard and my favorite LP in the entire store,” he said. I was confused since in his store, there were “Standards” and then there were “Traditionals”. He explained that the Trads were closer to being the Standards of the 80’s & 90’s than the actual new model Standards. Obviously, the reason is clear as to why it is labeled a “Traditional” LP. He said Gibson should have called the new Standards anything but Standard. While the new chambered Standards are not for me, they do hold their own for what they are. They just aren’t the LP’s with the tone and feel I grew up around.

My favorite Standard? 1st – my R8, 2nd – my Traditional

I would love an original 59! Who wouldn't? But for the majority of us, thats not going to happen. Even buying a VOS is a long way off for me.

The new Standard is an excellent guitar, sure it is different but it just works IMHO, I am very happy with mine. I have a Traditional and an 07 Standard to compare it to, and they are all great in their own way.

Well said! Don't you think that it would have been better if Gibson had labled their newer models with some other name. It might have served the Gibby aficianados better and with less controversy.

Definitely. Even though I can see what they were thinking in trying to "update" the Standard, but it shouldn't be called that. I think the Traditional should have had that name. Maybe just Gibson Les Paul 2008? Thats what everyone calls it anyway...

And Yoda, who is that in your avatar?!! O:)
