Luap
Hi everyone. Were there ever any real Solid Body LP studios? When did Gibson start weight-relieving LP Studios? And from when are they Chambered? Greets!
cwness
Good luck finding the answer to those questions. I have been trying to find out about my my 86 Studio. I posted on here and got only one person to answer. I called and sent emails to gibson and they new nothing. They couldn't tell what were the stock tuners, pickups, or what the were made out of. Unless you have a Standard or Reissue nobody here cares except a few nice folks. CW

Luap
I thought the Studio Line started in 1983. (correct if I'm wrong) So there were never any full solid Les Paul Studios made, since weight-relieving started in 1982
Luap
I thought the Studio Line started in 1983. (correct if I'm wrong)So there were never any full solid Les Paul Studios made' date=' since weight-relieving started in 19[i']82[/i] Today I read somewhere that the Studio Line already started in 1980. What year is correct, and were they always not full solid body, but always chambered or weight-relieved?
cwness
Luap Yes the Studio's were first weight relieved and now chambered. If you are thinking of a Studio I have had this since 87 second owner. Best guitar I have. That's why I'm asking the questions to find out about it to see why it sounds so good and plays so smooth. I have found out that the first few years the bodies were alder with what they called a deep dish top. This I got from an email for Gibson CS it was an early ad. Mine has one piece back that I believe to be Mahohany with a one piece Maple top. I got more info from Gibson CS stating they switched from the Alder bodies to the Mahogany and Maple top so I think a safe guess is that in 1986 they are Mahogany and Maple. It weights 11.5 The Pickups are what they called at the time just Patent Applied For and that's all the ad said. No name or numbers in the ad I also got from Gibson. Most of my info is based on info from add sent to me from Gibson CS so it is the best I can get. I still don't know what tuners came stock mine has Grovers and I can't believe the guy I bought it from changed them. Plays the sweetest old ZZtop off the first 3 ablums throught my old Marshall. cwness
Ya that's a good reason not to put info about the Studio together. He didn't even read my whole post. CW
pru56
Hey cwness: whats up, seem we have some more trying to find out about the Studio. There has been a lot of talk about the weight? I think you said your weighted about 10 to 11 pounds? That is a soild body, no weight relief. My XRIII Is no relief it to is around 10 to 11 pounds. Pickup as far as I can tell are the same as the standared back then 490R and 496T, these are in mine too. Mine is Mahogany with maple top and Mahogany neck. Tuners I not sure mine say Gibson on them but they could be from Grover, I do know that they are good one's. Hey nice to see more Studio and XR guy on here. Play on

cwness
Hey pru56 One of CS guys at Gibson did some digging and came up with some old adds.l Just said Patient Applied for in the add no numbers. CW
Tim Plains
pru, a 1986 Les Paul is weight-relieved. Anything after 1983 that's not a historic reissue does not have a solid mahogany body. Contact Gibson and see for yourself. Even 10 or 11 lb guitars have swiss cheese holes. My Custom is 10 lbs even and it has them. There was a Standard here locally that was well over 13 lbs, weight-relieved.
pru56
yes I have heard that, Some were done that way, not sure how many, just got to check your own like I did mine, I do know that mine is solid, and to say that there is not much info on the studio for those years. Thats good you got some more info from gibson, maybe they will start digging more. hey cool I don't know it all just what I have found from gibsom, gurhn, dan erlewine and the gibson les paul book. Hay good luck everyones
FennRx
if you're guitar was made after 1983 it is NOT solid, regardless of how heavy it is or what gibson says. they are notorious for poor record keeping and misinformation
six-string
i own a couple of Les Paul Studio guitars- there are both from the "GEM" series 1997. one Sapphire, the other Ruby. they are mahogany with maple cap (probably weight-relieved, but i've taken them apart to check??) they came with gold-plated hardware including Kluson vintage-style tuners and P-90 p/ups. i bought them both used and paid maybe $900 to 1000 each w/case. they are fun to play and its easy to get a great tone. that said, they don't hold a candle to my R6-goldtop historic. but then the R6 cost a lot more. cwness
I got some info on the pickups used in the 80's from CS at Gibson Specifications Inductance 4.95 Henries Resonant Peak 5.6 Khz D. C. Resistance 7.8 Ohms ( at 1000 cps) Impedance High Two Active Coils One Alnico 5 Magnet Adjustable Pole Pieces Removable Pickup Covers 2 Point Height Adjustments. It also stated this is the Humbucker used in most of their guitars since the late 60's So when did the switch to the 490 and 498 pups? CW
