New Les Paul with Pics

Hey,

You probably don't remember me but I posted a while ago about how I don't like trying guitars in a music store.

Well I finally got around to buying an LP. The pictures are of a 2002 (manufactured in early 2008) LP with a 50's neck. I am trying it at home tonight. Sounds good and feels comfortable but the action seems a little high and there is a some hum when connected to my amp. Tomorrow I am going to pick up a Traditional to try out and decide between the two. The 2002 has burstbucker pros and the traditional has 57's. Obviously, I have my own opinions but which do you guys think is the better guitar? According to Wii Fit (LOL) this 2002 LP weighs 8.4 pounds. Not sure if it's chambered or weight relieved?

This guitar is being purchased for my 40th birthday and I love classic rock.

According to Gibson, chambering didn’t start until 2007 and weight relieving was being done since the 80’s. I don’t think you can go wrong with either model. It boils down to what feels and sounds right to you. If you know what tone you’re looking for, then the decision will almost be a “no brainer” the minute you pick up and play that special one. I felt that connection when I bought my Trad.

Your 2002 Standard is the same guitar as a 2008 Traditional. The only differences are the pickups (alnico II vs. alnico V) and the Traditional will have a plus top and also have been pleked.

The 2002 is about $500 CDN cheaper...do you think I will notice much of a difference?

Yes, I think you will notice a difference. Different magnets yield different sounds. One think one is better than the other just because (say) it has '57s in it. It really depends on what you prefer. Me, I prefer alnico IIs over Vs. You may not.

I would get the traditional. For the sound your looking for, '57's would work great, and you can't beat a new guitar.

btw, did you say it was a 2002 made in 2008? ????????

The alnico 2 magnets of the ’57 pickups produces what I feel is that classic LP tone of the 50’ & 60’s. It has been suggested by many pickup manufacturers that alnico 2 has a warmer, smoother and rounder tone whereas alnico 5 produces a brighter tone with a tighter bottom end. Fortunately, you have the luxury of comparing the two and deciding which serves you best. The new pleked LP’s do have a better feel as far as frets and action go. I really think you’ll know which one has that special “mojo” after having played and compared them both.

Yeah it's the 2002 model.....made in early 2008 as opposed to the new 2008 standard made in late 2008. I'm not sure why it's called the 2002 model but that's what everyone calls it! The tag in the store read, "2002 les paul with '59 neck" The headstock says made in the USA 2008.

Can't wait to try the traditional later today...I played the crap out of the '02 last night...

That makes no sense. L&M?

A 2002 Les Paul has nine weight-relief holes. A 2008 is chambered. It's probably called the 2002 just to point out that it does not have the features of the new Standard but your guitar is chambered if it was built in 2008. False advertising if it is because if I saw 2002, I would be under the impression that it was weight-relieved.

Yes L&M. Weighs 8.4 pounds but I don't know how that relates to chambering vs. weight relieved. Stamp says made in 2008.

I never discussed chambering with them so I don't feel its false advertising. The sales guy did mention the Traditional will be heavier. Funny thing is there was another identical guitar which felt a lot lighter.

If I remove the back plate from my CR8, I can clearly see that the guitar is chambered. If you remove the back plate from your '08, can you see if it's hollow inside? I had a BFG but can't remember what it was like.

^ You're right, it doesn't make any sense. The reason I asked if it was L&M (Long & McQuade, it's a music store up here) is because I saw the same "2002 les paul with '59 neck" sticker at another L&M.

Tried the Traditional and I love it! Weighs 9.6 pounds if that matters and I'm keeping it. Love the pickups. Setup was great right out of the box. I now get why you guys love these things so much. Can't stop looking at it. More later...gotta get back to playing!

Hey CJGolf2000,

Congratulations! Either way you could not have made a bad choice. Although I have an R8, I love my Trad for so many other reason including her good looks! (my avatar) Yours is a beauty as well. Is there such thing as an ugly factory LP? :-k
