thejay
Since the price cut by Gibson, SGs have been going for some low amounts on Ebay. I'm shocked really... pick one up for around $800 thats a steal for a Standard. If you don't mind taking your chances on there...

Stevie Nazarenie
you have to be carefull there! do the mid range older gibbos get faked alot? i mean say a 1970's sg with an expected selling price of £500 or so?
jimmiJAMM
Bought my last five guitars, including two SGs, off eBay and they're all 100% perfect! Been lucky, i guess.
Stevie Nazarenie
have they been verified by gibson? did you see the chinese gibson?
jimmiJAMM
Yes, they have both been verified by Gibson and no, I have not seen the chinese gibson, an elusive breed.
drumrnmuzik
I remember seeing something on the Gibson site about the differences on the bindings on new guitars. I know that there's real huge copy buisness going on in China. Who hasn't see the fake watches.... Probably more risk of getting some kind of mechanical issues from second hand stuff. Good luck! James Walsh
Even more ironic is some Epiphones are made in China by Gibson there and are high quality... this year and last they got it together. I say check the serial number before you buy from eBay or anywhere else online. If in doubt call Gibson Customer Service. I think it's up to us and Gibson to protect against fraud. We are smart enough to have a pal go with us to shop for a guitar. Nothing is worth having if it's sold as real when it's fake!
drumrnmuzik
Last year I got an Epi Dot which is of course an E335 copy made in China. I brought it back because there were little pieces of wood falling out if the inside. (?) The replacement one I got sounds great (better then the first) and seems to be made very well. There's only a couple of filing marks on the frett board. It cost me 350 bucks... so I'm happy. I just ordered a Epi SG, G-400 so that I can do some sound experiments.
