BlueLightWas
A few weeks ago I bought an SG special faded. Loved the guitar but after working with it for several weeks I found the think neck which I thought I liked, was actually getting in my way and causing me to screw up. I loved the neck but it didn't work for me. So I returned the guitar in time to get my money back and i saw a used 2007 '61 re-issue for $1600 + $80 tax with a case (at guitar center). The guitar had barely been played. I put more wear on the pickguard of the faded in 3 weeks than this guitar had in 2 years. It's in great condition. The Gibson logo on the head stock had some small but noticeable amount of separation so you could the "gibson" was fuzzy around the edges. This link describes that common problem though this SG is not at all as bad as the photo's here: http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/gibson-les-pauls/11123-gibson-signature-pearl-inlay-headstock-not-coated.html Here is my question. I'm not used to spending so much for a guitar. I know the story about how you should shoulb buy the best guitar you can, but this is a lot of money for me. The new one is $1999 so I saved about $400. I'm not sure if I should have looked around for a better deal. The guitar is like new that's for sure, but I also did not get a Gibson warranty. So the question is, what sort of resale value does this guitar really have if I need to unload it down the road if money gets tight?
Tim Plains
The price seems a bit high. Then again, it is at a music store. Try searching eBay's completed listings and see what they're selling for. By the way, they cost $1,850 new in Canada. $2,000 US for a new one is a rip off.
jimmiJAMM
+1. Bought both of mine on eBay and they're 100% awesome!!
BlueLightWas
They are 1850 in Canada? Does that include the case? I think you may be able to get them for that without the case even in the US but I'm not sure.
BlueLightWas
Ebay shows them going for between $1300 to $1400. Not many above that. On the other hand you don't know what your going to get on ebay until it arrives. Now I'm not sure. Do you guys think I should return it and look for a better deal? Tim Plains
^ That's entirely up to you. You don't have to buy off eBay, just use it as a source for current prices. What about craigslist? At least the ones on CL are local. $1,850 CDN with the case. That 'pay extra for the hard case' crap doesn't happen up here.
vourot
My favorite L&M sells the 61 RI for $1875.00 CND.I guess they still have old stock or something. They are generally pretty good with pricing when the dollar rises. They are also trying to sell faded SG'S for $1175 CND and they haven't ajusted any of their SG standard pricing to reflect any price drops. So they giveth from one hand and give you a reach around with the other ( in a bad way )
cwness
I have seen them go for 1100- to 1400 on Craigs used. They just had a 96 listed at 1200 in what looked like excellent shape. I would have looked at it but I sold my 61 because I like the thicker neck on the SG standard. That was in Twin cites MN if you wanted to look at it.
