Was Someone Thinking About Bridge Pins Again?

Was Someone thinking About Bridge Pins Again? I distinctly picked up a vibe that it was yet again time to post something about bridge pins.

Well as suggested, recommended, and directed to do; I got me a set of Bob Colosi bridge pins. Bone with double inlay (tort-abalon). So here's what I think.

-Good communication with Colosi, he answered all my questions.

-Shipped the day I ordered them, arrived 3 days USPS.

1) Zero need to modify them. The pins dropped in as a perfect fit. I know I have heard size 1 from others, but 2A, fit my bridge (and all even across the top).

2) No defects. Perfect in appearance. No imperfections. These are made with care. I even used my magnifying glass. Good craftsmanship

3) No loss of sound quality to my guitar, in fact I may have to admit that the guitar sounds a tinge brighter and a miniscule louder. But strangely I can feel the strings vibrate a bit more when my fingers rest on the pickguard. And as you all taught me, I made sure that the string balls were correctly seated (using my official inspection mirror.

4) Back to number 2) Dang, these look nice on a J45, the tortoise ring matches the pickguard, it really classed up the basic look of the guitar and the abalone inlays change colors depending on the light. Nice.

5) Back to numbers 2) and 5) Did I mention that they look nice.

What do ya think.

Don,

Jeff here. Fairly new to forum. I have a 96 J-30 and just this past Saturday purchased a 2007 AJ that is just killer. I played others that did not impress but this one carved itself into my brain and couldn't stop thinking about it. So I have seen your posts about pins and now I am considering... Would like the hardened Ivory... and saddle too. As I am in Macon, Bob is only a few hours away. Heck UPS might be only one day : }

Those in the pic look great. And I am guessing the 2A would be the correct size for the AJ.

Well it's always best to double check with Bob. He is very responsive. His email address is rcolosi@tds.net his site as you know is http://www.guitarsaddles.com/

Also, perhaps someone with an AJ could check in here.....................Pretty sure there has been a few who said that a 2A worked for them. But, curiously some J45 owners said that size 1 worked and others said 2A. I actually had tried a size 1 (much too small).

But again maybe some AJ folks could check in. Good luck.

Hey they look nice, huh? Did I mention that? [-o<

2A is the correct size, sometimes they are just a little too big, but you can sand them down if needed.

You can also send him a bridge pin & he can make the exact size!! Or in your case you can take one to him!!

Hey Yaz..... 2A is for sure the right size for an AJ... Size 1 pins typically fit Taylor and Larrivee guitars, but both my Gibsons are 2A size.

AJ's look great with a bit of "Bling" on the pins and... wait for it GG.....

I also had "No loss of sound quality to my guitar, in fact I may have to admit that the guitar sounds a tinge brighter and a miniscule louder" in fact louder is not what I heard, but maybe a bit brighter and a bit more sustain then with the plastic pins that come standard in the AJ.

I actually have sanded a slight bit on a couple of the pins recently and now try to keep them in the same hole they came out of for that reason. Here mine are the day I got them.

Don, Thanks for the tips. I will definitely be getting some pins and like I said, maybe a saddle. I am head over heels with my AJ but disappointed by the plastic appointments. So it goes huh. I will likely do by UPS since little time in the near future to make the trip down to Savannah... but, it sure would be a great reason to visit a great city. Any thoughts on the potential sound differences between bone vs ivory vs walrus? Other than the bling factor?

On to an entirely different subject - I see that you are a former police officer. I have a friend who is a retired detective from Atlanta and he was the investigator who found the key fiber evidence that lead to Wayne Williams being convicted of the crimes for which he is doing time. Perhaps you are familiar with that case? My friend is one heck of a guy and I feel honored to know him.

Cheers - yaz

Hey Paul,

How goes it today? Towel over the door... hmm, .....lol. Seems some memories of that if I can remember that far back. ha

Those pins sure look nice on your AJ! Did you change out the saddle too? I could be wrong but it sure feels like the saddle on my J30 is bone so the plastic on the AJ is ... well.... And the pins on the J30 are Rosewood. I wonder if all J30 Rosewoods came in this fashion or just one of Gibson's weird one offs?

Hey Yaz....

The saddle on your AJ is bone for sure. In fact once you change the pins out to bone your AJ will be all bone because the nut and saddle came that way. My saddle is the stock one as I believe that bone is the way to go with Rosewood/Sitka combos. I think most standard Gibsons (and Martins) come with plastic pins. You will love dealing with Bob C. He is a heck of a nice guy!

Thanks for the info. So now I will be ordering em tomorrow=d>

Without the issue of the saddle it somehow seems like an easier decision to make quickly instead of wondering do I wait until the saddle can be done too. For that is not a task I want to try myself. Have a good guitar tech across street from my office - and long time Macon musician, but he is not quick. And I am not up for parting with the AJ just yet.

Hey do you remember much of Moorhead's layout? I lived on s. 17th st right next to the interstate and Probtsfield Elem. Dad worked right next to the Shakey's in Fargo and they even put up a sign that it was the "Fargo Officer's Club." He was in Army and stationed there..... Anyway, I have great memories of my time there. Lots of weekends at Detroit Lakes and Sugar Mtn skiing. Was always better at that than hockey since my skating was pretty lousy. Ha - I got schooled by the natives!!

Real nice. You take my last decent guitar after a bet we made when I was under the influence, and now you want to make a sticky that will include my admission of that I was wrong about bone pins. [-o<

Hey Wily - If you take one out and rub it, you can use it for a walking stick.

TWilson.......OH??!!!! I see how YOU took it!!!! I don't know if you know....that there has been so much conflict over whether bone pins make a difference sound wise that a sound engineer tested guitars before and after the pin changes with VERY sophisticated and sensitive equipment and actually found a measurable improvement. So the bone pin argument can be put to rest. The sound is actually a new sound, which adds to the existing sounds of the guitar. It is subtle buy you can hear it. It is called an overbone......so with overtones, sustain, volume, and other attributes of the sound of the guitar, you can now have overbones.......I can hardly wait to get my set!!!
