SG Special or SG Standard?

My son finally turned the corner in baseball, and dad can be a bit overbearing on doing things right in baseball. SO I want to do something nice for him, he's 11 and has been playing the guitar and taking lessons for over a year, so the interest is there. I took him to see AC/DC awhile back and he really wants a black SG.

I thought about getting him and Epiphone SG but saw for sale a used black SG special for $600 and a black SG Standard for $700. The Standard is about a year old. Any preferences here on either one?

Thanks

All things being equal (maybe try them both out?), for a difference of 100$, I would definitely go for the standard

Jack,

That's awesome that you took him to AC/DC! I agree with the other guys, if you can get the Standard For only $100 more, I'd go for that. The Special is a cool guitar too. See which one he likes playing.

:- Absolutely,

Also what a great dad buying such a nice axe for your boy! Us sons might give you hell at some stage of our lives but we remember things like that foreverx

I recently bought a faded and loved it but after about 3 weeks the lack of filled wood on the neck did start to get to me and also the lack of finish did not work great when my hands would sweat. I started sticking to it. So I returned it within the alloted period and got one with a finished neck. It makes a difference.

WELL AS SOMEONE WHO OWNS both IN original condition...

LET US NOT FORGET THAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO IS JUST THE PUPS !!!

BUT THE PICK UPS ARE WHAT MAKES THE SPECIAL......special....

.NOTHING BEATS THE TONE OF A SET OF P-90;S...

THEY ARE THE LONGEST RUNNING SINGLE COIL PUP EVER AND STILL THE MAIN CHOICE FOR GIBSON PLAYERS WHO WANT A SINGLE COIL SOUND.

UNLIKE MOST OTHER SINGLE COIL PUPS P-90';S ARE THE BOMB...

THEY ARE WARM, CLEAN AND HAVE THAT GREAT BELL LIKE TONE.....

YET SATURATE YOUR TUBES AND YOU HAVE A GRITTY ROCK N ROLL MASTER.....

THE STANDARD HAS HUMBUCKERS AND WILL SOUND PRETTY MUCH LIKE ANY SOLID BODY WITH HUMBUCKERS.......

I HAVE A 61 LES PAUL CUSTOM WHICH IS THE FIRST SG AND IT SOUNDS GREAT.......

THE GOOD PART ABOUT BUYING A NEWER ONE AND THE STANDARD MODEL IS THAT YOU CAN GET A PICKGUARD MADE FOR P-90'S AND WITH A VERY LITTLE WOODWORK YOU CAN INSTALL THE P-90'S INTO THE STANDARD.....

THIS WAY YOU CAN CHANGE THE PUPS AND HAVE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS....

HAVE YOU PLAYED BOTH MODELS?????

MAY I SUGGEST YOU TRY BOTH MODELS WITH AN AMP SIMILAR TO THE PONE YOU USE AND THEN MAKE YOUR DECESION.......

EVERYONE'S PERSONAL IDEA OF THERE PERCEPTION OF THE PERFECT TONE CAN NOT BE BASED ON A SET OF PICK UPS...THERE'S A LOT MORE TO THE SG'S TONE THAN PICKUPS !!!!

I HAVE BEEN PLAYING FOR OVER 40 YEARS PROFESSIONALLY AND HAVE OVER 40 GUITARS SO I AM GIVING YOU FACTS AND NOT MY OPINION

IMHO THE BIGGEST PART TO GETTING YOUR BEST TONE WITH A GIBSON IS TO GET THE BEST TONALLY VERSATILE FENDER BLACKFACE AMP.

IF YOU TAKE THE SAME TWO GUITARS AND PLAY EM THROUGH A DELUXE REVERB AND THEN SAY A VOX AMP THEY WILL SOUND 100% DIFFERENT.

SO PRIOR TO MAKING YOUR DECESION TRY TO GO TO A GUITAR CENTER AND PLAY BOTH THROUGH AN AMP SIMILAR TO THE ONE YOU USE.....

THEN YOU'LL HAVE A BETTER IDEA OF WHAT THE TRUE TONE WILL SOUND LIKE.

AS WE KNOW SG'S ARE MADE OUT OF ALL MAHOGANY.....

WELL I RECENTLY PURCHASED A RAW POWER SG.....THESE ARE THE LIMITED EDITION ONES MADE THIS YEAR OUT OF ALL MAPLE TOP, BOTTOM AND THE NECK........

GIBSON HAS USED MAPLE NECKS IN THERE EARLIER L6'S AND THE ZAKK WYLDE LES PAULS BUT NEVER HAS THER BEEN AN SG MADE OUT OF ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE LIMITED OAK MODELS FROM THE EARLY 90'S FOR THE 900.00

YOU CAN NOT BELIEVE THE DIFFERENCE IN TONE DUE TO THE DIFFERENCE IN WOOD.....SO GIVE THAT ONE A TRY AS WELL.

YOU CAN GET ANY ONE OF THESE MODELS USED FOR UNDER A GRAND WHILE NEW THE SPECIAL AND RAW POWER ARE ONLY 900.00 AND THE STANDARD IS 1500.00.

IT ALL COMES DOWN TO WHAT TONE SUITS YOU !!!!!!

MY OPINION IF I COULD HAVE ONLY 1 SG I WOULD GO FOR THE SPECIAL...OR CLASSIC AS IT IS CALLED NOW !!!!!!

SINCE THE NEW SG THAT IS FOR SALE COST OVER 1300.00 NEW......IT BRINGS UP SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT EH CONDITION OF THE AX AND IF IT IS ON EBAY I WOULD BE VERY CONCERNED AS THIS IS A LOW PRICE.

SG'S ARE KNOWN FOR HEAD STOCK BREAKAGE...FOR A FEW EXTRA BUCKS YOU CAN GET A NEW ONE WITH A LIFETIME WARRANTY, IN YOUR CHOICE OF COLORS AND OPTIONS....YOU CAN ALSO GET A FADED ONE FOR UNDER 699.00 BRANDY NEW......

PERSONALLY I WOULD GO WITH THAT BEFORE I WOULD TRUST SOME STRANGER ON EBAY.....

From what I see in the specs on GC...

P-90's are on the Classic's and Specials have 490R/490T PUPS

A one year old Standard for $700 is a deal.

I've got a Standard for and love it. I can't say enough about it.

thanks for all the repsonse's. I never did hear from the guy with the special, going to go see the standard on sunday, it's about 20 - 30 minutes away. May try and take him to GC on Saturday but both kids have baseball games so not sure if I will get there. Wife wasn't to big on the idea but she'll get over it.

Thanks again for the input.
