wilconorth
after quitting one addiction(tobacco free times one month)I want to reward my other addiction and am starting to save up for another guitar.last year I got my first quality instrument a tv sunburst J185 .I want to add to the collection but with what I'm not sure.I'm torn..... a 12 string ?or a gibsonAJ ?or maybe a martin of some type.I would like to get a martin but pricewise they are so dam expensive that I'd be looking at a a mahogany top guitar like the one in this link .. problem is I'm worried the wood not going to sound as great as a spruce top...and at the moment there is nowhere close by that I could test drive one anyway..... currious to hear some feedback from you wise lot....thanks

guitarstrummer
Well, you've got a lot of options. I think the first thing you need to decide is if you want a six or twelve string. If you want a 12 string, take a look at the Martin J12-16GT. I'm guessing they still produce it, but not sure. I have a 2005 model and it sounds amazing. It was less than $1000 new. I also have a Takamine EAN40C12 that sounds great and it was about the same price as the Martin. If you can spend a bit more, the Gibson Songwriter Deluxe 12 string is a great guitar. Now, if it's a six string you really want, you can't beat an AJ or a J-45, but I'm not sure what your price point is.
wilconorth
was just having a look around and was surprised at the price points on the 12 strings.......sort of assumed in general they would be more money...the store I ordered my j 185 had a martin dread 12 string.Any idea how the jumbo vs the dread might compare sound wise ...construction and materials on the 2 are the same if I'm not mistaken thanks for your input
gearbasher
My humble opinion....GUILD....the best bang for the buck! But, I will always love my Gibsons
TheLiveSoundGuy
I'll leave the guitar choices to you, but I did want to say as someone who recently quit smoking myself after forty years and 2-3 packs a day. You will probably be able to afford both a Martin and a Gibson in no time flat! Congratulations. It's a ***** of a habit to break.
