charlie brown
Clapton replaced Andy "Top" Topham, in 1963...October (I think?). If I remember right, Clapton was either still IN "Art School," or had just left. I never got to see "EC" with the Yardbirds, but I did get to see the Yardbirds "Live" several times after that...with Jeff Beck, then Beck and Page, and later with Page, alone...in the guitar spot. They were a great band! It was in the Yardbirds, that I first saw Page use his famous violin bow, on his guitar. And, in one concert, they used stobe lights, to great visual effect, during "Over, Under, Sideways, Down" some time before that lighting effect became (almost) the norm, for a lot of '60's groups. So, they really were quite innovative, in many ways. CB

G u e s t
When I saw them first (early sixties) it was Clapton - but memory suggests Tony Topham and/or Chris Dreja on guitars. Duster Bennett (who I had/have immense musical respect for) and Top worked together a few times and Topham was quite 'lead guitar' as I recall, so my money is on him..... though I may be confused, 'cause I am sure I saw him with Greeny once, so I am really just guessing..... But I am sure he was called (amongst the more polite things) Ant, Tony, Top and Anthony - can't recall Andy. But I was, ahem, out of it that decade - so anything is possible..... I the USA South, a Yardbird is simply slang for a Chicken. From there it became known as a Jailbird. Notes
wicked1
Sorry not a huge Beck fan; and also forgot he was in their also. Must be because I am not a huge Beck fan Not a huge Beck fan here either. There are a few of his songs that I appreciate, but for the most part.....he's waaaaaaaay overshadowed by Clapton & Page. charlie brown
Personally, I much prefer the original Yardbirds, to anything I've heard from the "New Yardbirds." The new stuff is too much like every other "shredder" band. The old had soul and grit, and a lot of innovation. Blues base, but kind of Jazz too (especially with Beck), and even early Psychedelic. Personally my favorite Yardbirds stuff is the Beck era. I think "Heart Full of Soul" is probably my favorite tune of theirs by far.
charlie brown
The other thing I loved about the original Yardbirds "Live" was that they sounded SO MUCH heavier, ballsier, than on record. Yeah, I know..."DUH," most bands do...but in their case it was really obvious. Don't know why their engineer ("Roger" was it....LOL!) didn't (or couldn't?) get that live tone? Maybe, it was the technical limitations, of the time? CB
