It took me forever to do an avatar of my Boogie/339 in a bar. It looks just like Junkies, only it's been sweated on and gigged in bars for a solid year, and the tailpiece is changing color, and ABR-1 is getting funky, and where my right arm lays is getting harder and harder to clean, and the strap is beginning to show some wear on the nitro, and the rosewood is beginning to show "those" marks....... I guess it would sound more like a 335 then... it could be interesting sometimes. Tell us if you try... One suggestion for Gibson : create a 349 but not with a varitone like the 345' date=' with a middle boost instead. ----------------------------------------------------[/quote'] The "fat" boost on my Blues Jr. and the mid-boost on my BYOC Triboost pedal both help with bluesy gritty amp settings, but clean amp settings are better without the mid boost (actually true no matter what guitar I plug in). I venture to say there isn't a huge distinction between the 339 and 335 tone-wise, and I agree there is probably a way to close the gap by swapping pickups or tweaking the amp settings. However I'm reminded of when Rosie O'Donnell had Martha Stewart on her show with fancy recipes for imported cheese canapes with cured olives or whatever. Rosie splat some Cheese whiz on a Ritz, popped it in her mouth, and said, "My question to you, Martha, is 'WHY?'" Middle position is truly efficient with chords, bridge position corrected with tone on 5 or 6 is a bluesy dream. But i didn't find a way to make the neck pickup sound fat enough to have is own identity. Therefore I'm considering a 335, its neck position is legendary. I prefer bridge position of 339 than 335's one but it not enough on the other positions. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

There's kind of a window or sweet spot on the pickup height. I like to back it away to pick up some low-output "clarity" or sparkle, but you may be after a higher-output midrangier blast that just might come from raising the pickup a hair (before it gets muddy or gives you wolf tones). Then again, there are plenty of aftermarket pickups striving for that goal. If you're looking for an edgier sound, I'd think that Burstbucker type unevenly-wound pickups might satisfy you more than the evenly wound '57 Classics. In fact the output chart, and a few posters here, have said that the neck position '57 Classic has a higher output than the Burstbucker 1, so there is going to be a few differences in the sound. Are you comparing an ES339 with an ES335 that also has '57 Classics in it, or a Historic with Burstbucker 1 &2, or a vintage 335? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
